It’s no surprise when the name, Oli McBurnie crops up that a split Swansea support will want him back or indeed see him as a player who shouldn’t return to the club. And that’s just one Oliver we get to talk about today. There’s another.

We will start with McBurnie.

We reported on the Swans position with Oli nearly two weeks ago, and momentum has been gained since that report. That’s below.

What we can confirm today is that Oli McBurnie (below) remains of interest to the Swans and he very much passed the first test as a potential option and there’s a reason for that. It isn’t just about goalscoring but Oli has maintained one goal per 3.4 games played in his career based on his minutes on the pitch, that’s the key factor. Not appearances, minutes played. Last season he weighed in with six assists, that’s around one in 5.6 games played for Las Palmas in a struggling side, and let us tell you they were shocking at times. That’s why they were relegated out of the top league in Spain. With that evidence a positive - and reflecting back on the levels he has played at a more mature and level headed McBurnie is now very evident. Settled with a family it has by his own admission been a catalyst for McBurnie. Now twenty nine years of age his relegation clause at Las Palmas has made him a free agent. Not happy to stay on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria and fight his way back to La Liga his position is very clear.

He wants to return to the Championship or Premier League and cites the distance at times between himself and his family an issue. When the Swans reviewed all of McBurnie’s situation on the pitch and off the pitch they were not put off but more interested in taking his return to the club further. That has happened and we have been told this weekend, to not discount Oli returning to Swansea, he is keen to do so. However, to do so he will have to turn down two better financial offers than the Swans can make. His agent has spoken to numerous clubs including Swansea City and both parties know where they stand financially.

As a free agent Oli McBurnie holds the cards on where he goes next. His recent X (Twitter) activity has raised the hopes of many Swans followers, even liking a post that he should be sporting the new Swans kit for the coming season. Confirmed reaction from a contact close to Oli is that nothing is ruled out, and Oli if achievable will return to Swansea, that is until he himself chooses where he wants to be.

This isn’t false hope, it’s beyond that now.

This isn’t a Harry Darling situation which has left some at the Swans still rather unhappy that a more immediate decision on his contract offer wasn’t responded to. Nor Lewis O’Brien as it is first down to Nottingham Forest as to what offers they accept for their player. Marked in and around five million pounds has put the Swans off to an extent and then his salary which is available at two of the most recent clubs attached to him. That deal has come to a stop as it stands. Talk of the Swans preferring a loan only is not accurate. They remain open to anything but the finances being talked about are not currently acceptable.

Even Hull City are backing away.

One thing to remember is Montague’s words a few weeks ago, quite simply that he won’t be jeopardising other targets to secure one and conclude his business. The club know their ceilings on players, and it has to be said the Swans are in very safe hands. No player will be brought in that causes financial disruption, that is the first rule this transfer window.

We saw a post by Alan Nixon (please don’t send any more) that Ollie Cooper below is linked to Wigan. All we have on that is Ollie is a player that would be available for the right terms. He is still seen as a valuable asset to the Swans for the coming season and no official talk has taken place. He is a Welsh international and a part of the many ex academy players to reach the Swans first team and contribute to its current success. We have also been informed that if Ollie was to leave the club permanently then the increased revenue share for players being released for the 2026 World Cup adds more value to him as a transfer. That’s money that the Swans won’t want to lose. They are looking into that currently.

That’s a bit more meat on the bones as the saying goes, any potential signing coming in won’t be released by this website until any deal is in place and an announcement is pending.
