Sunderland fans to be in the home stands. on 19:08 - Mar 14 by Noxidgiarc | To be fair if they bring 4500 it's about 4000 more than all the other teams in the league barring a few, plus the extra locals that will attend because it's a big game. The ticket office told me before the Bradford away game that all the hospitality was sold out before that match. With the extra 4000 tickets it's an extra £90,000 income before any of the extra locals. We may be in the same league footballing wise but why not capitalise on the extra income where we can. We aren't the first club in the league to do it, and I doubt we'd be the last. If 90k of extra income from visiting fans can come into the club I'd happily give up my seats for 90 minutes. If it get the Tottenham atmosphere and we up our game who knows what it could do for our season. Sunderland aren't renowned for being trouble causers let's hope we don't embarass our club. |
Why is it an extra 4000 tickets? They have 3,500 in the Wilbutts and are being given 532 in Pearl St. the 3,500 is available to them regardless. As others have said it's an extra £10k which when you take all the expenses off will end up being virtually nothing yet you piss off loads of fans. If they were going to do it for financial reasons they should have given them the whole Sandy or something so no segregation is needed and they get more people in their. This half arsed effort is almost completely pointless.

Agreed, but they also need to placate other users of that stand who may have safety concerns.

Sunderland fans to be in the home stands. on 19:13 - Mar 14 by frenzied | They play Accy 3 days before..I’d be interested to know what the arrangements are there |
I’m fairly sure they opened 2 full stands to them for the original game as opposed to the 1.5 stands they open for everyone else (Us included). This is proper mountain from molehill stuff as the club doesn’t have many options. Normal, open sale and there’ll be loads of Sunderland fans in the home ends and this is very difficult to steward and police. This seems like the most sensible solution given there’ll be at least 500 empty seats in the pearl street if this move hadn’t taken place. For the record my ST is in the Sandy and last season was in the main stand. If I’d been asked to move for a one off game in either case I wouldn’t be bothered.

someone has suggested that it represents an extra 500 away fans, the actual extra paying visitors is more likely to be in the vicinity of 1000. The away stand is often restricted to less than capacity on safety and segregation issues. We don't know the full facts or cost versus income. Its best left to the club to make the decision they cant pander to the individual, storm in a teacup will be forgotten quickly and for those in attendance enjoy the atmosphere when a massive club like Sunderland comes to Spotland.

I thought only the police in the ground were paid for by the club & the stewards will do most of the legwork. I don’t know what the hourly rate is for the police time but if the extra ones needed for those extra 500 fans eat up the 15 grand or so then I think I’ll apply to the force
Sunderland fans to be in the home stands. on 20:07 - Mar 14 with 3410 views | BlueDales | We've had numerous big clubs play at Spotland in League matches over the past ten years or so. Both Sheffield clubs, Spurs, Huddersfield, Southampton, Leeds, Wigan, Bradford, Blackburn, Stoke, Notts Forest. Need I go on? Their supporters didn't get allocated any of the home stands - like Sunderland, they'd have sold out any allocation they got regardless of the size of it. This is a bit of a joke. If the board don't believe that we can sell the home ends out for the Sunderland game by putting home fans in them - and without further aggravating our fans - then they don't know our club. Yes, we take in a little bit more by charging higher ticket prices to away fans, but how much of that is lost in extra security costs? More so, what is the cost to club-supporter relations in all of this? Who's board are they - ours or Sunderland's?
Sunderland fans to be in the home stands. on 20:20 - Mar 14 with 3368 views | kiwidale | Only the board knows the financial gain versus cost the board must be allowed to make this decision not the guy is seat C33. Give the board some credit they alone know the figures involved it seems they have become an easy targets on here. The way to make your concerns known to the board is through the Trust. Maybe a trust member can give us their take on this.

Sunderland fans to be in the home stands. on 20:38 - Mar 14 with 3324 views | Daleaholic | Can't quite fathom the hysteria being whipped up by some on here. The football club is a business, whether you like it or not. If the club can make money, it should. Even if it means pi$$ing a few people off. If YOU were on the board of directors or YOU were the chairman and you were looking after the financial interests of Rochdale AFC, would you turn down an extra £10K? No, you wouldn't. As a club, we need as much money as possible and opportunities such as this aren't weekly occurrences. Think a lot of Dale fans need to realise that time has moved on and we're no longer a club that can succumb to the fans whenever they disagree with a decision made by the club. There's an opportunity to fill the empty seats and the club is doing just that. Well done I say. [Post edited 14 Mar 2019 20:40]

£10k is 50+ STs …… just saying. We may well be losing more than that number anyway after this season. Personally I don't give a fiddle where I sit and quite enjoyed standing in the Sandy for the Gateshead game for a change. I think where this process might have been improved would have been to consult more through the trust earlier in the season and have a dialogue around the issues. Not as if it's suddenly a surprise Sunderland are coming to town?

Sunderland fans to be in the home stands. on 20:53 - Mar 14 with 3265 views | Molly | I sit in the main stand so it doesn't really affect me. However I know that if I had to give up my season ticket seat for one game my reaction would be , OK fair enough. I still get to see the match and RAFC makes some extra well needed cash. It's a one off ffs . I get my own seat for another 23.

Can't detect any hysteria to be honest. Sure, some fans are aggrieved about being moved. Only spoke to one who sits in the Family Enclosure and he is fuming, nor has he received a letter. I am not happy to attend with my son unless I know well in advance of segregation and security arrangements. I've also suggested a rough hewn gross revenue figure from which I have suggested deductions, meaning a nett gain of what? It's almost done just for the sake of doing it. Because we can. But thats just my opinion based on certain assumptions.

Sunderland fans to be in the home stands. on 20:57 - Mar 14 with 3248 views | James1980 | Just did a bit of research. If my counting was correct section U in the Pearl Street holds 532 and 289 of those seats are reserved by season ticket holders. I will guess the segregation netting will mean a further 45 ST holders in section V will need to be moved so that is 334 ST fans being told to move. It will be interesting to know how the letter is worded.

I can understand anybody being concerned for the safety of their son. I would have been when my son was younger , but will it not be safer inside the ground where there are stewards and police within a well defined area rather than on the public highway where opposing fans will be able to interact more easily?

Well as part of the safety concerns, are both sets of supporters leaving the ground at the same time? What if Dale have pissed on Sunderlands chips and their fans turn feral? It was bad enough being close to the Bradford violence. It'll potentially be a lot worse with away fans already in the Pearl Street end. I notice that all relevant safety officers have been consulted . Can their recommendations not be made public?

We are due a weekly Bottomley bullshit post,I'm sure he'll set all our minds at ease with regard to safety. It seems a bit of a half hearted attempt to bow down to another fair size club, whilst pissing our own fans off and drastically increasing safety concerns. Ultimately another 500ish seats still won't satisfy demand anyway so why not just leave them all in the one stand to begin with just like every other bloody team that's come to our place, or are Sunderland suddenly the biggest team ever to play us at home, fook em!!

It's exactly the type of bread & butter thing concerning fans that the Trust should've have had some input into, even if the club ultimately make the decision Can someone let us know if the Trust were consulted, or not? And if not, are the Trust going to take this up with the club; not necessarily about the decision - too late for that - but about not being asked for their input? I suppose it could be argued that if the club had consulted the Trust, it'd have got out and might've stymied their plans to (try to, as judd points out) increase revenue from the fixture. OK, so when push really comes to shove, the Trust will be sidelined... Unless they were consulted...? [Post edited 15 Mar 2019 1:33]

Good points. It was always going to be a tough call to give up home parts of the ground, and no doubt it has been to the fore of thinking since both teams were confirmed for League 1 this season. Sometimes it takes a shit or bust approach. I think in this instance the nett revenue generated is one option above not doing anything for away fans. Besides, given the absolute farce of the Gala Dinner in our 111th year, publicly acknowledged consultation with the Trust was surely the way to gain fan support for this initiative once instigated?

Yep - agree with this and DA's post. Basic common sense and basic customer service. Fundamental role of the trust to act as go between to ensure as many paying customers are as possible are happy with policies. Make hay while the sun shines but try to minimise collateral damage. Putting out a fait accompli just puts backs up.

Also... Objects potentially thrown (either way - we know some of our lot like to lob the odd object) Turnstile congestion/confusion All dale fans will only have access to one toilet block therefore large queues All dale fans will only have access to one catering stand therefore large queues and loss of revenue as fans dont bother queueing Studds will only be accessed from one end where the toilets and large food queues have formed I fully support the intention but for the relative small cash gain (if any) i don’t think this is the greatest idea of 2019 [Post edited 15 Mar 2019 0:08]

The issues you have raised are the relevant ones for me. As I sit in the middle of the stand I am highly unlikely to be moved, but I am worried about the issues you point out. My primary concern is fan safety and crowd control in the stands. There have been several instances of issues with our fans and opposition fans throwing objects in the last couple of seasons from bottles, coins, smoke bombs/flares and even tyres. There were also the issues when Oldham fans were in the home end a few seasons ago.On each occasion our stewards have proved to be pretty inept at resolving/containing these issues. And PC plod are next to useless as they spend their time trying to earn money from you've been framed with their camcorder footage instead of actually doing anything at the time. I understand the club trying to increase revenue but as others have pointed out will we actually make anything extra after the policing bill etc.? I honestly can't see how our stewards will manage to maintain a safe environment in the stand. For me the board have made the decision of putting revenue before fan safety and to me that is unacceptable.

Sunderland fans to be in the home stands. on 01:28 - Mar 15 with 2695 views | D_Alien | Thinking about the above posts from Daley_Lama & Toffeemanc, and with the Willbutts stand specifically designed to accommodate rival fans, wouldn't the more sensible and financially advantageous solution be to put Sunderland fans in the Pearl St plus half of Willbutts on that side, and put Daley Pearl St ST holders + ticketed seats in the other half of Willbutts on the Sandy Lane side? That way, both sets of fans will feel they're together and not trying to compete across each other, which could lead to clashes I'd expect two minutes discussion with the Trust might've sorted this out. Wouldn't it? [Post edited 15 Mar 2019 1:57]
