Glad they’re back in the league, but I don’t remember Hartlepools promotion a couple of years ago making news at 10?

I went to an evening with Jeff Stelling on Thursday night and he said that their 1st choice of club to buy was Hartlepool but the owner wanted his money back that he’d put in to keep the club afloat before he would sell to them. They chose Wrexham instead.
Ironic that on the day that Wrexham got promoted,Hartlepool lost at home to virtually condemn themselves to the national league in Wrexham’s place.

Apparently the two Yanks had a shortlist of 5 teams. Like ya say Hartlepool was top of the list. I had it in my head they had issues with Hangus the Monkey. I’d also have an issue spending a lot of time in the only town in Europe that has a nuclear power station. Macclesfield was also in the running but was apparently deemed too posh! I can’t remember the other two candidates. Possibly Grimsby was one.

Not watching television anymore or being on Facebook or Twitter this Wrexham thing has made no impact on me at all. They’re still this plucky team I quite liked cos 1) They used to go on a few giant-killing cup runs and 2) they’ve got an x in their name.

Will be looking forward to the away trip next year and depending on the time of year might make a few days of it as I love visiting Wales.

This is an interesting perspective on Wrexham:
Wrexham’s success shows that content is now truly king in football - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/may/13/welcome-to-wrexham-tv-series

It's not only that their three successive promotions have been artificially engineered and funded that should concern us, it's that football has become a provider of 'content'.

As the article points out: "...observe how young people consume soccer and you’ll quickly realize that most of them engage with it in all imaginable ways except for watching full games – but some sort of end stage has been reached. Soccer is the raw material now, not the final product."

I watched something on YouTube the other day with one of the Wrexham owners, he was saying that another American owner of a UK football team did a study of something along the lines of 'What UK football teams do people of middle America know'.

3rd was Wrexham
2nd was Manchester United
1st was AFC Richmond (from the TV Ted Lasso)

Not sure what to make of that, mostly it's Yanks not knowing football but also like you say people want content. People want a story. It's arguably why F1 has seen so much popularity a few years ago with the addition of Drive to Survive.

Such a bogus language, half the time they're using English words.
I refuse to take seriously a tongue that translates "Jellyfish" into "Pysgod Wibbli Wobbli"

Yeah it’s bollocks. It’s even put me off watching It’s Always Sunny, lately. Bstards, I hate them for that.

Maybe I should just pick out the episodes where Mac gets the most grief.

I need a SAGA. What’s the SAGA? It’s ….. Queen’s Park Rangers.
