I never heard it said. Do you have any sources? Wrexham were alway only one step short of league 2.

my twitter was full of it, in comparison to you saying on here that Merthyr should join the LOW.

And Merthyr are only three steps short of league 2, so what is your point? Should every club three steps short of league two get up and go join another league?

I wish Colwyn Bay all the best but they were pressurised into joining the welsh leagues for financial reasons.
If Merthyr can afford to carry on as they are then they should carry on as they are.

Hit the social media, fans forums etc, and tell every Merthyr fan you come across what league you believe they should be playing in and then ask them for their opinion.

I await your response after the exercise has been complete.

Seeing this thread reminded me of a half-forgotten book in my collection, and I dug out David Watkins' Merthyr Tydfil Football Club. Tempus, 1999. There are more photographs than narrative, but the book gives a very interesting overview of the high points of the club's history. There are loads of meetings with football league clubs, stirring cup runs, many achievements from the Southern League days, and a chapter on the rise to the GM Vauxhall Conference. Merthyr Tydfil FC achieved its highest league finish of 4th in the Conference in 1991-92. A previous incarnation of Merthyr Town FC was a Football League Third Division club from 1920 to 1930.

The clock was always ticking on Port Talbot. The Uk Government would be wise to stockpile steel in the vent of a future need.

The clock is also ticking on Merthyr FC. They belong in the LoW. South Wales's big hitters. It is only a matter of time before like PT they realise that is the place to be.

200 jobs to go in Dow Chemicals Barry, but not a mention of that in the media. It's all about the Steel for some reason

Thanks for this post mate. I recall having this book and I dug it out a few days ago after reading your post.
Very interesting indeed. And great to see Merthyr doing well in non league, especially when so many clubs have gone bust etc.

I think it depends on how many teams are in North and South.Hereford play in North because they have to have an equal number of teams in each division. So if 2 teams come down from division above that are from the north they must be replaced

I was listening to Owen Money a few weeks ago, he believed where Merthyr ended up would hinge on the Gloucester City play off results. If Gloucester won they’d go North and Merthyr would go South, if Gloucester lost (which they did against Totton (Southampton based team)) Merthyr could well end up in the North. Apparently there’s talk that it’s a toss up between Merthyr and Hemel Hempstead for the Northern league place, they should find out pretty soon.

Travelling big distances will be fun for a while but the economic strain will grind them down.

After a while they will realise if they play in the north most of their best players will be based in the midlands . It might be easier to train up there as well.

If thr clubs players are midlanders it takes three hours of travel time to Bishop Auckland.

Just come to Merthyr for the matches. It would save money Merthyr need.

Then you ask the question what is the point?.
