What a bunch of ******** 19:41 - Apr 12 with 2934 views | trampie | The English led Labour Government are stepping in to help Scunny steelworks yet they did very little to help Port Talbot. Looks like naked racism to me, Port Talbot had a bigger capacity and a harbour, both should have been saved due to the importance to the UK but if only one was to be saved it should have been Port Talbot, it smells of anti Wales racism.

What a bunch of ******** on 08:33 - Apr 13 by trampie | English led UK Labour Government said they could do nothing to save Grangemouth or Port Talbot as they were owned by private foreign companies, Scunthorpe also owned by a private foreign company when about to close down Labour says we can't lose English jobs we will recall Parliament and effectively nationalise it and let taxpayers in Scotland and Wales keep the English in work. It looks like naked racism. |
Well it's not racism clearly but as for the rest, you are right. Starmer has allowed Wales and Scotland further decline but won't allow it for England, it's wrong. We lost more jobs in Port Talbot than they've saved in Scunny, it's completely unfair. Starmer ca be a unionist and if he is can't he understand that this kind of behaviour is more likely to drive people towards independence? People though Labour in Westminster would support Labour in Wales, tirns out that's total BS.

What a bunch of ******** on 13:53 - Apr 13 by ReslovenSwan1 | It is not good for business to have two or three bank holidays for Wales Scotland Ireland and England. Many companies have regional offices and projects need to be finished by working together. With each bank holiday 3-4 days work will be lost because a key worker cannot complete a piece of works with a strict deadline. Wales is not a separate island state.. I had a chat with a Neath person the other day and many laid off workers were ambivalent about Port Talbot downsizing as many of those released were getting on in age and happy to take a pay off and pension. I am not saying this is widespread and clearly not good for south Wales. At least the locals lungs will improve especially the young children. The raw steel requirement for the British army is limited I would think. UK has only a few hundred tanks and fighting vehicles with quality over quantity the target. Drones a are the military of the future. Ships and tanks are looking very vulnerable. The Royal Navy with two giant aircraft carriers needs to keep them well out of missile range. Perhaps this is why they are talking of selling one off. [Post edited 13 Apr 14:00]

Rubbish in respect to BHs. Scotland and Ireland already have BHs. So should both Wales and England. No extra BHs, just an existing one reallocated. Your business understanding is quite wrong. Every business can run throuh every BH as 3/4 of the UK will work as normal. When England has St George day off, then Wales, Scotland and Northern Irelsnd will still be working. And these business can plan in advance so its a bollox arguement whichever we wsy you look at it.

The company was taken over by the Government on Saturday after the Chinese owners moved to close the Scunthorpe site. In a post on X, Energy Secretary Mr Miliband hailed Parliament being recalled from the Easter recess to pass emergency legislation. He said: "Very proud to be in the House today to see my colleagues Jonathan Reynolds and Sarah Jones standing up for British steelworkers and industry. "This Government is delivering the muscular industrial policy this country needs in uncertain times." But veteran broadcaster Mr Neil replied: "The nauseating hypocrisy of E Miliband is jaw-dropping. "He and his kind across the political class - Labour, Tory, Lib Dem, SNP - promoted the very energy policies that lumbered Britain with the highest industrial energy costs in the world, making industries like steel uneconomic. "They tolerated no dissent from their net zero nonsense even as deindustrialisation gathered pace. "And now Miliband has the audacity to pose as the saviour of British steelworkers! In truth, the British political class has shamefully failed them, none more so than net zero zealot Miliband." Jingye, the Chinese owner of British Steel, had planned to close the blast furnaces at Britain's last primary steelmaking plant. The company now faces a race against time to ensure it has enough raw materials to keep the two blast furnaces burning. Without those materials, such as coking coal and iron ore, the blast furnaces will cool, which risks irreparable damage.

Miliband and the rest of the net zero mob, will continue to waste £ billions, until they eventually realise they are running our economy into the ground with their policies on something that is a natural phenomenon.

They do need to wake up. The first thing they need to do is vote in the first place, we don't always vote Labour, most people don't vote at all. That allows Welsh Labour to rely on their traditional support. I don't understand how the public have been so complacent and let the Senedd get away with things for so long. NHS is in a mess - that's ok, education is rubbish - that doesn't bother me, stupidly strict covid restrictions - lets allow them to get a working majority again, Cardiff gets everything (including first minister constituencies) - Fine by me. Slightly reduce the speed limit on roads I drive on every day! I'm not having that, I'm going to vote for Reform! Why? Can't tell you that because I don't know. Who on earth do we vote for? We need massive political reform - I'd love a sensible centrist party to emerge from somewhere.

Wylfa Nuclear power station used to sell cheap electricity to the Aluminium works on Anglesey in the past. These plants should be working 24 hours and using nuclear and wind power at off peak rates. When Wylfa shut down so did the aluminium works. Port Talbot is not closing. Younger workers will keep their jobs while the older works take redundancy. These jobs will be cleaner and hopefully more secure. The world is an imperfect place. [Post edited 16 Apr 13:37]

What a bunch of ******** on 20:13 - Apr 12 by Scotia | Port Talbot will make the most of those facilities due to its Freeport status, we could end up with more jobs than were at Tata. Two of the UK Freeport's are in Wales. Personally I think that the UK, should be trying to become a world leader in steel production using Hydrogen. |
There is no carbon in hydrogen. Steel is an alloy of Carbon and Iron. Coking coal is used to both heat and the iron ore and to provide the carbon to combine with iron to make the alloy of steel. Varying the amount of carbon plus other compounds make different grades of steel including stainless steel. I agree it was nonsense that Drakeford and his government closed Wales only anthracite open cast site. Anthracite is used throughout the water purification process by every water coming the UK. It was also used to power all the heritage railways in the UK. Now we have to import all the coal we use for all industries using Fossil fuels to transport it from thousands of miles away.

I think the suggestion is that hydrogen can be used as the reducing gas to process iron ore via a DRI process. The sponge iron produced contains elemental carbon, but has a lower carbon content than pig iron. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_reduced_iron More scientific detail here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S095965262103972X The lumps or pellets produced (the sponge iron) can then be converted to steel in an electric arc furnace or electric smelting furnace.. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, this is what Tata are planning to do in the next few years in their Dutch plant. They have signed a contract to build a DRI plant that can use hydrogen, including in various mixes with other gases. https://gmk.center/en/news/danieli-selected-as-green-technology-supplier-for-tat "ENERGIRON technology is extremely flexible, accommodating various hydrogen-containing reducing gases (natural gas, syngas, coke over gas, hydrogen) and iron ore qualities. It operates under diverse conditions, utilizing locally available resources at competitive prices. This versatility ensures efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly production, making ENERGIRON a robust solution for the evolving needs of the steel industry." "Carbon content in DRI can be set as required, providing additional chemical energy to the steelmaking process. The range of carbon content is wide enough to satisfy all steelmaking needs." 0-4.5% https://www.energiron.com/ [Post edited 17 Apr 16:54]
