Whatever happened to Steven Phillipps, the author of "The Survivors" and the remarkable "Rochdale AFC Official History"1907-2001".

The latter to anyone who hasn`t a copy, summarises every season and has details of every player with full statistics and team photos.

What happened in 2001 when it ceases, and did anyone continue the analysis? I remember I was setting up as self-employed at the time and was a little detached from the Dale at the time, so may have missed this.

Nothing has happened to him. He's still alive and well, and a regular reader of this forum, as well as a good help to me and other historians when a Dale query crops up.

I'm not sure if there's any intention to update the history, especially as results, teams, etc, since 2001 are all now available online.

EDIT: He has also brought out four Dale Who's Who since then, covering every Dale player up to 2016.

Here's the first one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rochdale-AFC-Whos-Who-1907-1939/dp/1905891644

He has been helpful to me also in my recent Dale-related projects.

Please pass on to him my great admiration for his amazing historical research and excellent commentaries on people and events. I go back to 1955 with Dale and though now an exile, the flame still burns.

You, a journalist. will appreciate the difference between dry statistics and a nuanced piece of writing. As a chartered accountant, I am only too familiar with statistical reports that appear to be factually precise, hiding all sorts of underlying information.

What Steven shows in his writing is deep knowledge of events and people but had delved deeper into people who maybe only briefly appeared in the Dale history, but had a significant effect on events at that time.

Please pass on my admiration for his (irreplaceable) work.

You should read The Voice of Spotland, far better than anything that Fitz bloke has produced....

Anyway, Steven has read this thread and passes on his thanks.

Are you planning a book about the Ogden takeover and this season? Your book about last season was really good.

Thanks very much, I’m really glad you enjoyed the last book and I appreciate the kind words. I’m not planning to write another one for a while though. The time it takes, alongside other work and home life, is just a bit too full-on at the moment. I’m planning to watch Dale solely for enjoyment for a while, if that’s ever really possible.

I did cover the Ogden takeover at the end of the last book. It turned out to be a happy ending, which didn’t seem likely at all while I was writing it with the season still unfolding.

I had been commissioned to write a feature if we’d won the FA Trophy, but obviously that didn’t happen. I’ve been asked to do something similar if we win the play-offs, so we’ll see how that goes 😃

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure the next book will be worth the wait.
