Was at the game, York very disappointing after an excellent season and Oldham worthy winners.
Definitely a strong argument though for 3 up from the National League (2 automatic and one via playoffs) and 3 down from League 2. The difference in standard is marginal in my view and recently promoted teams have gone on to do well e.g. Notts C and Chesterfield (Wrexham slightly different given their financial backing).
I've always thought in cases like this where the team who were runners up and just missed out on automatic promotion should be given a bye to the play off final as some sort of reward for the fantastic season they've had and then let the four teams below fight it out to meet them.
I think it should be done in the EFL play offs as well, the team who just misses automatic should go straight in the final.

Fair shout but there is a challenge potentially then of loss of momentum which I think was a problem last night. Oldham won well their qualifying game last week whereas York hadn't played for I think 15 days

Where do you draw the line though? 5 points, 10 points? 2nd and third go straight to the “semi final” automatically anyway, 4-7th fight it out to join them.

It's quite simple. After 46 games, the final league placings speak for themselves. Southend, who finished 28 points behind second-placed, York, could get promoted through the play-offs.
You're essentially rewarding/incentivising relative failure/intermittent performances at the expense of a team that performed at a more consistent level throughout the entire season.
On the other hand, even in say 15th it gives you some hope that you might reach the play offs. If the top three only went up we might as well have spent the last 10 years in a 12 team league fighting off a never ending battle against relegation.

Agree with this. I want to say scrap the play offs, but this then prejudices the 'lesser' teams (particularly in the Championship, where the top 3 is pretty much nearly always likely to be clubs with the ridiculous parachute payments)

I guess then if, say Sheff U went straight to the final you’d then need 4-7 to play off to get a winner to meet them, that’s 3 or 4 additional games and then Sheff U would probably moan that they’ve not had any competitive fixture in that time and are not up to match speed. Other way is just to have 4th and 5th play off, then the team that finishes 6th moans! You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t!
The non-league playoff system is great and much fairer than what we have in the League but you take away much of that advantage when the games are spaced out as they are in the National League. In the NLS the quarter-final winners had their away ties four days later which along with the home advantage gives a real edge to the higher-placed side (both lost).

One of my best mates is York fan. Pretty gutted they lost. Oldham looked far better though. Think if you finish 2nd you should just be in the final.
Southend reach the final from seventh on pens. Fan runs on the pitch and belts the scorer of the winner straight in the mush.
Bet he wishes he'd put it over the bar now.
Either Oldham or Southend going up means wirh Barnet and one of those two back in the league, I get 2 x 92 ticks back to offset Carlisle and Goodison. Sorted.
Should definitely be 2 automatic slots and 1 play-off from the National league to League 2. Not sure how they justify it these days.
