"Claude Puel was another young coach...."

He would have been 55 at the time we recruited him.

Poll: Would you be happy with Rishi Sunak as a new Saints owner?

He is young compared to me

We will just have to wait and see. He seems like a sensible guy, although slightly nervous and softly spoken. Young managers, like young players are rusty, sometimes naive, and I fear this could cost us in an unforgiving championship. I do have my doubts. Playing in a physical Championship in Stoke on a cold Tuesday night is probably different to playing in France in their top division but I hope those doubts are put to bed early on.

You mention Poch, he wasn't totally unknown, he was previously an Argentinian international who played in the world Cup. You just knew he knew how to win games from his playing career, a manager you listen to straight away, having played numerous times for one of the best national sides in the world. Will the players listen to a manager that has never played the game to a high level? Jose M is the example of a manager who never played to a high level, but WS doesn't have the arrogance and confidence that a young JM had!

I like how Still has spoken about a high press, winning games, high energy. Sounds good. The Brighton manager and the Sunderland manager are examples of young unknown coaches who have done well, so fingers crossed, but this is a big gamble in my opinion.

The issue of:

"Will the players listen to a manager that has never played the game to a high level?"

The current squad of players have absolutely no credit in the bank.

They have completely failed to show they belong at the highest level of the game.

It is for the players to earn the respect of the manager.

Otherwise I trust that Still will be having words with Spors to get them out of the door.

Let's use the Nathan Jones experiment as an example. He's clearly a good manager at Championship manager and below. He did a superb job with Luton in the Championship and he has just promoted Charlton from league one, a club that has been stuck in that league for years.

So what went wrong at Saints? He was completely out of his depth? Why? Because he had no experience whatsoever of a fierce, pressurised relegation battle in the PL. He had no experience of dealing with PL players. He was swallowed up by the pressure, and couldnt handle the job. That wasnt a surprise. He had no experience of it. It was a ridiculous appointment, simply because it needed a calm experienced head at the time, not an experiment.

The Will Still appointment is a risk because he lacks experience in the league we want to promoted from. There will be intense pressure on him, to ensure we are at the top. NJ had a lot going for him when he was appointed - enthusiastic, young, a motivator etc. But he couldnt handle the pressure. Experience teaches you that. I hope my doubts are unfounded and he does a brilliant job, I really do.

Yes, he's a gamble, but a gamble has a possible upside as well as a downside. You're focusing on the downside. Fair enough, maybe it won't work out. But to have a balanced view you've got to look at the potential upside too.

The potential upside is that we get a real top level manager. We could never get such a manager who has already proven themselves, they're literally out of our league. But we could get one who isn't proven yet - and proves themselves with us.

I think it's a reasonable gamble to take on WS. One reason for that is that he's succeeded at more than one club, with more than one set of players and more than one playing style. With NJ, he was only any good at Luton and was a disaster at Stoke which was a red flag to me. Maybe WS will bomb too but I think there's more evidence to say he will succeed.

If Still is to succeed he needs a good backroom staff alongside him, get an experienced coach in with Premier League experience.

Poch was totally unknown in this country as a coach when he arrived and he was a failed one at that.

Funnily enough when we had a Dutch international who had played for Holland in a World cup final, who certainly knew how to win games including League titles, cup finals & European trophies, did anyone respect him at St Mary's, certainly not the fans

It’s been a while since you brought this up….

Remind me of the details of his stellar managerial career.

Whether he was a good manager or not isn't the point here
