Transfer window open - set-piece specialist player and also coach required 09:49 - Jun 4 with 976 viewsPatfromPoole

In addition to a new keeper......

It's all about small margins, football.

We haven't been very good at all at set-pieces since Ward-Prowse departed.

Our current options appear to be:-

- Manning tries to whip a ball in, but it just seems to have a random desired target, or;

- Smallbone plays in a ball at 5 miles per hour which it is impossible to head in with any power

We just haven't had the look of having even tried to do anything original or creative.

Definitely an area we need to up our game in; again it is something which can make the difference between 1 point in a game and 3 points.

I see that Georgson has left United. Could we also get him back as a set-piece coach??

I am occasionally criticised on here for being critical.

However I do look to try to provide solutions rather than just criticising for the sake of it.

I personally don't believe set piece coach is a real job.
Can you imagine having a job where you just work on set pieces for 40 hours per week?
I'd say set plays are less creative now than they were 30 years ago.

Decent set pieces are all about the quality of the delivery, it's not complicated.
Players who are going to shoot (like a JWP, Bale and Beckham) practice their technique for hours.
Most other kicks are all about a flat-ish delivery with pace so someone might get a header on it. No one has ever scored from a ballooned floater to the back post !
I'm really not sure why they need a full time coach to train this.

It's defending set-pieces as well as attacking them though.

Every club seems to have a huge number of coaches / analysts / geeks on iPads nowadays.

I just look with envy at Boscombe (again, sigh...) and some of the goals they scored from set-pieces last season, including against us. Some of their set-piece goals were really clever.

In the modern game, set pieces and set piece coaching are massive. About a third of all goals come from set pieces, so even if you only had 3 coaches, 1 of them should be focused on set pieces. Also, detailed coaching of set pieces can make much more difference than coaching open play because you can control what happens much better, so it is worth spending more time on it. Saints will have many more than 3 coaches, but will also need specialists for the keepers, fitness etc. All in all though, if you don't have a set piece coach, you're not coaching properly.

It's been obvious looking at Saints that we don't spend enough time on set pieces. Some of the goals we have given away from corners and free kicks have been ridiculous. We haven't conceded because the opposition are better players, we've conceded because we've been a disorganised shambles.

Another reason why we've been so poor at set pieces is because we haven't had enough physicality in the side. I suspect that's going to change. I expect to see fewer tippy-tappy midgets and more players like the new signing Quarshie. It was also good to see Ross Stewart score a header from a corner, hopefully a sign of things to come.

Exactly... I have done an Analysis Certificate with the Barcelona Analytics team and one of the key parts in the course, was exactly about set pieces , be that free kicks, corners both in swinging or out swinging even throw ins ... all can be analysed and improved by looking at patterns and the statistics. You can also tell which player in the defence is the trigger... dont forget during the typical match you could have over 20 different set pieces , again be that corners free kicks or throw ins so understanding how to better use their advantages is huge in modern football.

Bump.

I see that Georgson has gone to work for Thomas Frank at Tottenham.

Never mind.
