Thumbs up for Hawthorn 16:05 - Jun 26 with 4088 views | 222gers | Went there as 1st pub of my ST renewal pub crawl. Only 1 ale - Oxford Gold but it was fine. Not the greatest selection of beers, but lovely scotch egg and chips. Nice atmosphere, quite full for lunchtime. Really good jazzy & bluesy music on sound system. Even a piano(!). I played a few things but an American bloke told me I was playing all the wrong notes. Rest of crawl - worst ever. Askew no ale, Andover closed,Thatched only duff Pride, Prisoner of War, 4 ales, all of which I had to take back. Hammersmith Belle, previous posters were correct, hell on earth. Spoons came to the rescue.

Open last week although I don't go there - I think it was Greene King, so hopefully better owners taking over.

I will rarely go to a Greene King pub. Awful beer.

Agree - Greene King is the sort of brewery no-one welcomes taking over your pub. They can make half-decent beer but finding it is only to be achieved in parts of East Anglia ... and that rarely. A pint of IPA in "The Champion of the Thames" in Cambridge (behind Sydney Sussex} is generally excellent but it's a little far after a last pint at 2.20 on a Saturday to reach HQ in time for kick-off. Otherwise I tend to avoid Greene King. I think "The Richmond" which I used for years, has been taken over by them and despite the landlady's support for the Rs, the beer is a non-starter.
