I've just read that the sports hub in Underhill park is to close after 2 years of opening, it's very much a community project but run by a private company which doesn't allow it to claim rates relief so the bottom line is they owe the council 67k and the rateable business value is 100k per annum , who ever thought that it would generate enough income to pay it's way and who in the council set the rate for a facility which should be replicated elsewhere in the City but won't be. |  |

Its sad to see, it has a real community feel about the place and packed to the rafters every time I've visited to watch either football or rugby. I just wish facilities like this could be replicated on the east side of town which has very little in the way of 4g pitches etc. | |

The RV is set by the VOA which is part of the Civil Service.
The Business Rates multiplier & relief rules are set by the Assembly.
Councils only collect Business Rates on behalf of the Welsh Assembly, they don't set the charge.
Hopefully there'll be a sensible solution to this though. |  | | |

Thanks for the information, it is nuts to reduce council costs by selling off or outsourcing services only to tax them out of existence, a total lack of systemic thinking. | |

They were trying to get Underhill redeveloped back when I was playing for Mumbles Rangers, that's the 80's. There were stories and arguments, residents moaning. It was a lomg time before any serious plans came out and another long time before they finally did it and now this.
Shocking. It's a community facility and provate money should be kept out of it. Councils should run them and if it's as busy as has been siad then surely it can turn a profit. | | | |

So true , I live on the east side which is truly devoid of recreational hubs any where near as good as Underhill , Cefn Hengoed school now has a barn with 4 g pitches but it's still not enough . | |
