The Dangers of Summer Football 18:53 - Jul 16 with 1025 viewsVancouverHoop

Remember when it used to be just a Winter game? Oh sure there were a few home internationals and a relative short World Cup in Summer every few years, but that was before the climate began to change. Now it's a year-round money-making proposition.

Summer sports — cricket, baseball — are slower paced, consequently longer in length but less physically demanding. How come we've forgotten that? Does a famous footballer have to die of heat-stroke before we remember?

... of course. But comes at a price that's beyond dollars, pounds or gold.

Not just sport of course. What would happen if the climate got so hot that it would be impossible to work outdoors ?

Any semblance of pretence that they cared about players disappeared when the Qatar World Cup bid was announced

Too true. In fact I wonder how many of the workers who die building the 11 new stadiums for the 2034 World Cup*, will be from heat related causes?

*31 deaths so far, AFAWK. But the organisers aren't giving details.

It is not just money......Children (U16s) are playing tournaments throughout the summer (this is to get their club money to run the Club), playing friendlies, club trials, training.......basically it never stops.

Personally, I do not think it is a good thing.

1911 was reckoned to be the UK's worst heatwave (I remember it well).
Lasted over 2 months. An unknown quantity of farm workers died, dockers in the Pool of London refused to work. No AC or refridgeration so many people taken ill eating rancid food.
Gimme the winter anytime…

Wow, didn't know climate change was over a hundred years old!

Hopefully, the Chelsea fatigue will kick in around mid September.
Will wait for the inevitable excuses.
Solution- Don’t flog yourself to death in the the height of an American summer . Simple really.
