This is fair comment, but Gazza was the first mega star as football (and Sky Fcuking TV) exploded and left QPR behind and he wasn't remotely equipped for stardom. I think he's worked hard to overcome his addictions and can hardly believe he's still with us.
That said, there was absolutely no excuse for assaulting Cheryl and I still wince when I see the "tackle" that wrecked his knee. |
I think the media love a flawed genius.There was never any doubting Gascoigne's genius and passion on a football field but starved of the adulation and he turns to alternative highs, to feel ok. The fact it does then create other aspects to his personality, there is no doubt.
What he did to his wife is inexcusable. It did happen over thirty years ago and much as i hate what he did, it does seem that has not happened again, as far as I know. But with alcohol addiction heavily present in his life who knows.
Flawed genius, no doubt.
Unfortunately for him, still seems to have a self destruct button. Its a sad story in all reality but not uncommon in many ex pros.
Hope he finds his peace, which unfortunately for him is not in the bottom of a bottle or ten of beer !!! |  |

I think it's fair to say sadly he's always been on the spectrum, but nobody really properly diagnosed that 30 or 40 years ago.
And if you're that way mentally, then being thrust into mega stardom overnight is really not going to help you.
