If this is partially directed at me, I assume it is because no one else apart from OHL has expressed any dissatisfaction on this thread…. It’s quite ok and normal to be really happy with the window overall but still be a bit disappointed we’ll have Liam Cullen up front on Saturday and will start the season with one of the worst strike forces in the division. It’s not a binary system where you tick the happy box or unhappy box.

Fair enough. I didn’t read it like that. Let’s hope we get a striker in ASAP to make it an exceptional window. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Swans happy with the distraction as they work on getting players in on 12:43 - Aug 5 by onehunglow | It started off better and that's why we were more enthused than previous years It remains a fact , we still have no cover for Vig as I don't consider Fisher anything other than a bad legacy that should never be on our books Striker was and is the priority and has been for years Two key positions |
I’m still upbeat. Have been since Sheehan’s appointment and the change in style and enthusiasm of both the players and the fans. It showed everything that was wrong with the Williams era and the board. Not everything’s perfect, but I don’t want us to end up a Sheffield Wednesday through daft spending either Rich. Swans happy with the distraction as they work on getting players in on 13:35 - Aug 5 by jack247 | I’m actually one of the few on here that has no issue with signing loan players in key positions. I used Lewis O’Brien to illustrate the point before the window opened. I see a lot of benefit in borrowing players above the level we could buy. The reality is,waiting until the end of August and then picking up a starlet on loan was not and never will be the way any club wants to do business. Way too much can go wrong. We wouldn’t be bidding £4.5m if that was what we were looking to do. There’s a difference between adding an exciting talent to the squad when the top clubs have had their shakedown and starting the season the way we are going to. Does business ever get done early? Of course it does. I can pretty much guarantee you that the sides who will be at the top in May will have their squad ready now. There will be additions late August and January of course, but none of them will start the season with a strike force like ours. Don’t mean this to come across negatively. I genuinely think it’s been a fantastic window, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still be a little disappointed with our striking options. |
Your quote: "Does business get done early? Of course it does. I can pretty much guarantee you that the sides who will be at the top in May will have their squad ready now." What sides do you refer to and think will be at the top...your top 6? Current faves, according to the bookies are: Ipswich at 9/2 to win the title; Southampton at 11/2 to win the title and 7/4 to get promoted; Sheff U, 17/2 for title, and 23/10 for promotion; Leicester, 11/1 for title, and 4/1 for promotion; and, Wrexham, 14/1 to 22/1 to win the title, and 6/1 for promotion. You may want to reconsider your statement about top clubs already having done their business early: Akpom had his medical today @ Ipswich; Middlesbrough's Hackney currently negotiating terms with Ipswich after Mid agreed to sell for £20M; it appears that Broadhead is headed in the opposite direction to Wrexham for £7.5M; and, word on the street is that Ipswich is entering the race for Jens Cajuste of Napoli. As for Southampton, Everton is applying a lot of pressure to sign their top star, Tyler Dibling, with a 3rd offer for £45M (estimated) rejected. Imo, Everton will eventually get their man, and for Southampton to start spending on new recruits. As you know, Leicester has been linked to Kone, but they've kept their powder dry for now. Sheff U's Selles says he's expecting a couple of new recruits in the next few days with Villa's Louie Barry reportedly nearing a move. And, of course, Wrexham and their interest in Kieffer Moore, and the possible Broadhead deal, if their offer hasn't already been accepted. Also, don't forget the teams that will be at the bottom (Sheff W), or even League One, such as our Boo Boo Bird neighbors down the road. You're correct in that their squads have been ready since announcing their rosters earlier this summer!

Yeah fair, I can’t argue with that. However none of those clubs will start with a strike force anything like ours. From the top of my head and I’m bound to be missing players out here Ipswich - Hutchinson, Philogene, Broadhead (at the moment) Southampton - Adam Armstrong, Brereton-Diaz Sheffield United - Tyrese Campbell (can’t remember who else) Leicester- Daka, (also can’t remember the name but the guy they paid £20m for last year) I don’t think Wrexham will be at the top end, but they’ve just signed Ryan Hardie and may get Kieffer Moore. I’d say Birmingham are more likely, they already had a championship ready strike force and have just signed a striker from Rennes. Don’t get me wrong, we can’t compete financially with any of these clubs and you are right, they are still doing business and probably will be until the end of the month. The difference between all these (and pretty much any club in the division I’d guess) and us, is they will all go into their first game with a championship level strike force. We didn’t have one last season and apart from Wales for Bianchini, we haven’t been able to improve it. We have improved the rest of the squad substantially in my opinion. If I asked you three months ago if you’d be happy starting the season with Cullen and Vipotnik as our options, what would you have said?

Don't know about upbeat Luth , being more of a 3/4 man than a 4/4 That said, listening to Keith and his band , he's clearly 5/4 or 12/8 No offence meant [Post edited 5 Aug 18:15]

Nope, not good enough! Cullen's more of a poacher, and Vip isn't there yet. Cullen did well to get 11? goals last season. With Vip's physique he could be turn into something special if he can learn to read the game to get better positioning. Great scorers always find the holes in the opposition's defense. I very much agree with your point about being an improved squad, and I'm excited about all of our signees, even Santos, since we do need really good backups and utility type players. If Eom, Cabango, and Inoussa can play on Saturday, there's a good chance we will compete for a point at least, and hopefully 3. I'm not worried about Swans going down at the moment.

There we go, we broadly agree. Great window, one of the best I can remember, but it’s disappointing to start the season with the same strikers, which was easily our weakest area last season. I was wrong to say the top teams will all have their squads sorted. It wasn’t exactly what I meant, but it was exactly what I typed! What I should have said is none of them will start the season with glaring weaknesses in their starting eleven (particularly weaknesses that have been evident for a year). I’m certainly not worried about relegation, even with no more signings, but I don’t think survival is the extent of our owners ambitions. We’re not Cardiff City.

Yes, the owners are more ambitious than previous ones. Expecting bigger & better things out of them.
