A true pioneer of space flight flying two Gemini and two Apollo missions.

Jim will likely be the only man to ever fly to the moon twice but never land.

Rest in Peace Jim Lovell, Apollo 13 Commander.

RIP Mr Lovell.

He was played by Tom Hanks in the 1995 film Apollo 13. Great film that was.

Back in 2002, a mate was doing a Spanish course in Costa Rica. After a day, they bumped him up to join a group of female students from the US doing a college class.

A few days in, the exercise has someone going to the front and asking, 'Who am I?'. The class then ask questions, in Spanish, to identify the mystery person. My mate's turn, so given the class is made up of Yanks, he chooses a famous American, and the exercise begins.

After 10 minutes, the Yanks are no nearer solving the issue. So the teacher steps in and asks, 'Are you an adventurer?' My mate confirms he is and a few answers are made: Chris Columbus, Amelia Earhart. But not the correct answer and so my mate informs, that he travelled a very long way and the teacher asks, 'Are you an astronaut?'

One girl asks, 'Are you Buzz Aldrin?' My mate is somewhat bemused that the name of the second man to walk on the moon was offered says, 'No. But you're really close now!'

Whereupon one dumb ass goes, 'I know, I know....you're Tom Hanks!!!!'

RIP Jim Lovell. That was one hell of an achievement to bring the stricken A13 home, and with Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton as your crew.
