Yes he was Keith
Came as a genuine refugee after Russians inviting themselves into Budapest in tanks
He always felt he wasn’t fully welcomed here and seemed rather bitter
A limited fighter but a very big for the time one
Ali was near his peak then so he deserved credit

I remember seeing the cooper fight and he was booed to buggery
It was like abusing a national treasure

Same as as me too

People close to him, always said he never punched his full weight again - after boxer Ulric Regis died from brain injuries soon after losing to Bugner in March 1969!!

Many people talk about him twice going the distance with Ali - but forget he also went the distance with Joe Frazier, Ron Lyle etc

He also fought in an era (1960's/1970's) when heavyweights fought 7/8/9/10 times a year.

RIP

Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

I recall it was either a split and decisions or narrow win. I like to think the boos were for the judges not Bugner himself. There was always the feeling back in the day that you had to rip the title away from the champion not nick it with a narrow decision. Having said that Cooper retired and did not demand a rematch from what I can remember.

There were some big tough guys in Cardiffs West Indian community at the time. Neville Meade was one and Winston Allen. JB went from Earnie Shavers to Winston Allen who not even Welsh sports fans knew

Winston Allen was missing for a few days in Phuket after the tsunami in 2013. He was found alive and well. This is a fun read.

I always gave time for a feisty persistence against the odds.

He may be adding some extra gloss to his career as we all do.

Neville Mead was a lump of a boxer .

Very many years ago I seen him working as a care assistant locally for the elderly , nice one .

Did either Winston Allen or Neville Mead work the door at Barons many moons ago .
I have a faint recollection of some handy fellas at the bottom of the stairs .

My only concern was to navigate down them steps without going arris over elbow .

Shavers was security for Liverpool doors
Suffice to say , the safest place in the City
I’ve actually spoke to complete strangers on our village here and humble ain’t the word
Looking at the size of his hands was enough to deter anyone

Only other similiarly secure club was Jim Mills in Widnes
Jim wasn’t one to annoy exactly
