No matter how theoretically 'integrated' - the agenda only goes in one direction. And it's not ours. Demographic change will see the looting of the British people. Telegraph: Sir Lenny Henry has argued that Britain should pay slavery reparations to the country’s black population. The comedian has co-written a book, titled The Big Payback, which supports the case for the UK to hand over £18tn in compensatory payments. Sir Lenny has argued not only in favour of a vast cash transfer to Caribbean nations, but also for money to be given to individual black British citizens. Writing in the forthcoming book, Sir Lenny considers the position that “all black British people … need reparations for slavery”, subsequently arguing that “we personally deserve money for the effects of slavery”. A supporting section of the book, co-authored with Marcus Walker, a TV executive and charity boss, sets out the arguments and historical precedents for giving compensatory payments to individuals as well as states. Most of Britain’s 2.4 million black population is of direct African descent, and therefore not the descendants of people enslaved in the Caribbean. While this is not directly addressed in the book, the two authors argue that as modern racism was brought about by the slave trade, and all black people suffer the effects of racism, therefore all black people should be given redress. ‘Payments can be used to rid world of racism’ Sir Lenny argues that “the reason we have racism today and also …why black British people are grossly over-represented in the prison population” – along with other disparities such as higher levels of black unemployment – are “all because of the transatlantic slave trade”. The book argues that it is fair for Britain to pay reparations, despite no one alive today possibly having any direct involvement in the slavery either as a perpetrator or victim. The book, to be published by Faber on Oct 9, concludes that not only should the money be raised to hand out trillions in reparations, but that these payments can and should be used for “ridding the world of racism”. Reparations must “dismantle the foundations” of Western society built on slavery and racism and make “new foundations”, the book argues. This can be done by the “redistribution” of power, and “changing how power is shared within countries and between countries”. The book uses figures taken from the Brattle Report, a calculator by the Brattle Group, of how much Western powers owe to former colonies in the Caribbean. Its total of $100tn was reached by attempting to quantify things like loss of liberty, mental pain and anguish, and also loss of potential wages suffered by slaves. Sir Lenny’s book includes input from Bell Ribeiro-Addy, a Labour MP, and Kehinde Andrews, Britain’s first black studies professor, who has in the past argued that Winston Churchill was the “perfect embodiment of white supremacy” and that “the British Empire was far worse than the Nazis”. The release of the book comes amid a growing movement to pressure European nations into paying reparations to the members of Caricom (the Caribbean Community). The 15-member states want former colonial powers to accept their “10-point plan” for reparations, which includes demands for not only financial compensation, but full formal apologies, debt relief and help with economic development and education. The Telegraph previously revealed that Lord Hermer, the Attorney General, worked with Caricom when these demands were first drafted in 2013. He then advised on a potential legal case against Britain. More recently, the African Union has joined the Caribbean and made its own calls for “meaningful reparations” from “former colonial power

Hates this country Therefore , return knighthood Fact he was given one shameful enough
I think we can all accept that some pretty abhorrent things happened during the slave trade era , but this suggestion of suing for £17tn in reparations is in my opinion crackers. We aren’t responsible for what happened over the last 500 years ago in the same way the citizens of today’s Germany aren’t responsible for WWI or what happened afterwards. Over and above that, where on earth would we get £17tn even if we were minded to pay it!
What I do disagree with was when slavery was abolished “we” compensated the slave owners - totally and utterly wrong imho. I travelled to a number of Caribbean islands last year and some of them are very poor and run down - far from the idyllic places we see on tv. I’ve no issue with helping the countries in the Caribbean etc with debt relief, economic development and education and we can express remorse for what happened, but I think that’s as far as we can go.
Just imagine some Papa Doc type coming in to a trillion or two, I reckon we all know where a good chunk of that cash would end up !!!!
Bought my Levi 501s and Ben Sherman flannel shirts back in the day from Pictons Arcade . Derrick Records still going strong to this day too .
The Thomas Picton backstory was a over my head theme in my Bomber Jacket bus trips into the Town centre named then , no big deal at the time for us youngsters out on a day trip .
But now in the current climate any loony leftie with an axe to grind will jump on the bandwagon of if there is blame , a claim follows .
Lenny Henry was great on TISWAS along side Tarrant and Spit the Dog and Sally James .
Now another soap box activist preaching the wrongs of UK history .
Strangely he was not so vocal in the 80s at the height of his upcoming future stardom .

A gentleman's shop for certain gentlemen ,Harrington jacket, Crombie overcoat complete with red silk hankie in breast pocket , Ben Sherman button down then tear drop collars. Sta Prest trousers and a pair of brogue shoes, I also had a 1inch brim trilby but where from I can't recall. I think I out dressed Lenny in those days, perhaps I should increase my offer of a tenner to twenty .

Me tight what ever do you mean, 😉, too young to drive in the 60's but they were the cars of my youth, dad had a myriad of cars normally broken down on our drive ,Austin Cambridge,Ford Executive are two that spring to mind. Looking back I had a great childhood but now it seems I should feel guilty for not sharing my lemon curd sandwich with someone living in Montego Bay.

Because someone acknowledges the brutal history of this country and the terror it exported , doesn't make them a traitor, just informed
Funny how he never mentioned this when he used to caricature black people when he was younger now all of a sudden the multi millionaire is portraying faux outrage

Misinformed.
He's one of many in a long line of privileged ingrates that bites the hand that has generously fed him for 60+ years. £17 trillion would cripple the UK for generations to the detriment of ALL ethnicities. it's absolute nonsense.
“The reason we have racism today and why Black British people are grossly over-represented in the prison population.. all because of the transatlantic slave trade,”
They are also "grossly over-represented" in advertising, tv shows, historical dramas....The exact opposite of racism.
He's also got a new book coming out so he needs the clicks and furore, but it still boils my pee when people like him are trying to destroy the UK from within for self-interest.

I think Sir Lenny needs to think about.
All of the countries that were involved at that time, before and after. The thousands of men lost in the Royal Navy fighting the slave trade after the UK abolished slavery. The bigger Arab Slave Trade and the barbaric practices it included. Most importantly, it is estimated that there are more slaves today than at any time in history. We should be focussed on what we can change today.

100% this....
Slavery has existed in many forms for millennia and we all need to move on from it and tackle modern slavery which is vile and going on all over the UK...
I would also argue that a child working on a sugar plantation in 1800 had a generally better quality of life and health than a child working in the mines or ironworks in Industrial Britain in 1800. Workers were nothing more than indentured slaves themselves working in horrendous conditions and hours, under the fallacy that they were free men, women and children.
