Here’s another one that has been brushed under the carpet, since 2015 there have been over 100,000 people who have contacted the NHS with issues surrounding this barbaric practice. It’s been outlawed in the UK since 1985 yet convictions remain incredibly rare.
Studies by anti FGM charities claim many girls are being taken “on holiday” to countries where FGM is widely practiced but is also widely done within the UK itself. Cases are often only picked up by midwives later in the girls life during pregnancy.
What is FGM? It’s the mutilation of a girls genitals for non medical reasons in order to “protect their purity” and enhance the pleasure for men. They are often tied or held down and cut with non surgical or clean items such as a razor blade without anaesthetic by a non qualified ‘surgeon’. It leads to horrific life long problems including infection, pain, abscesses, cysts, infertility and major issues with childbirth. It’s estimated that 500 million women and girls are living with this world wide.
And it’s happening in the UK right now, far more often than you could ever imagine.
