Harry Redknapp wants Richard Dunne to lead them back to the premier league.

REALLY?!?! Hmmm not too keen on this one tbh, been out injured all season and has never been THAT great anyways. Also gettin on abit now aswell. No thanks. Keep Samba and Onouha together and thats better than any championship CB pairing already.

I agree with a lot of what Barbican Ranger has to say - we need to judge these players on a case by case basis - Nelson, Hill and Derry performed massively above expections, whereas Johnson, Bosingwa and Park less so - there’s no hard and fast rule when it comes to older players.

For my money, Dunne is a massive risk. Hasn’t played a game for over a year, and is, in my opinion too much of a risk for a 46 game long slog in the Championship. If he’d played 20 games for Villa this season I’d be all for him and expect him to be another Nelson, but I fear that this one may be more Johnson than Nelson.

Can we not knock it?

Nelsen hardly played for a year before we signed him but it's just paper talk at the moment, it's hardly worth taking notice of any of it

If Samba stays, No, the pairing of Onouha and Samba fine, or Dunn and Onouha ok,
with Hill as our back up Centre Back.

Richard Dunne on 11:24 - May 24 with 1248 viewsQPunkR

I'd have Hill ahead of Samba to play alongside Onuoha, all day long.

Dunne was an absolutely brilliant no-nonsense defender a couple of years back, and if he were to prove his fitness before signing I'd snap him up as an excellent part of the centre-back team.
Yes he's been out for the past year, but apart from that I can't really remember him being injured too much. We should, however, be looking for younger players ideally

We wouldn't have much to talk about if we waited until players signed though.

Mackie has been largely good, but hardly a star.

Not many were that excited about Bosingwa to be fair.

True, it would be boring if we didn't chew the fat over rumours but it was more the point that people were writing him off for the same reasons Derry et al were written off but then did well for us.

On Mackie, I would argue that he was a star - signed for £500k from a league 1 side - played almost every game in the Championship promotion season when many of us thought he'd be a bit part player and scored a lot of goals many of which were crucial. Since then he has managed to get by in the PL.

You can't just buy young players. You need to get the blend right. When we went up we had Hill, Derry, Smith, Kenny all over 30.
Experience is as key as youthful exuberance

Don't disagree but I think there is a bit of a myth forming with Nelsen and just how good he wass.

He wasn't great, he wasn't even very good. However he looked like a world beater next to Anton/M'bia/Boswanker/Traore and Hill.

Different subject, but you don't get a guard of honour after half a season at the club if you're not even "very good"

Even Alan Hansen pointed out how good he was on MOTD, one of our very few positives all season.

There really is no hope for ANY player pleasing you if you think RN wasn't "even very good"!

On the plus side - he lives near me.

Physically his body was shot. He himself admitted that. Wasn't as if we started conceding goals after he left was it? He was the best of a very poor bunch.

I thought Mackie got injured half way through the season and replaced by Routledge. To be fair that's not taking anything away from him, scored a lot of goals and would have probably played in every game if fit.

I think Mackie is exactly the kind of player we need, right mentality, right age bracket.

Dunne is a decent player and a good character, I can see the appeal

Thing is I'm not sure he's known for being a good character - pretty sure he's had his fair share of bust ups with managers and has been seen as a bad influence in the dressing room. Would have thought the last thing we needed.

If not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled. PG Wodehouse

Doesn't it seem, well, desperate to be considering an ageing player who hasn't even been playing? OK, it may just be a rumour...

33 years old. Currently paid over £30K a week. Hasn't played a competitive game for Villa for over a year because of injury.

Yep. Certainly sounds like our type of player.

Exactly.

COMPLETELY the WRONG type of signing.

Yes, he's an alright player still. Yes, he could "do a job". But that's not what we need.

We need to think longer term than a 33rd yr old on his last legs and looking for his last pay day (no matter how "hard working" he is).

We need to change a culture. We need to get some youth and enthusiam back into the club.

We need to look to bring in players on the up in their career, whom we can rise back up the leagues in tandem with.

Dunne is a polyfiller signing. Papering over the cracks and putting off all the hard work of proper rebuilding until some point in the future, which is exactly what I'm coming to expect from 'Arry.

If this is true, even if it doesn't go ahead, Redknapp can sod off as far as I'm concerned. Whether he'd be "good" for 6-12months isn't the point. We need to think bigger, longer and more strategically. What is QPR about? It's not about players on their last legs, taking a step down in league and club and looking for their last pay day.

There's nothing wrong with the idea! It might be the player that's wrong, but Richard Dunne has the temprement that QPR needs.

Our best player's this year Ryan Nelsen, and Anton Townsend, both limited but their levels of self-respect and honesty raised them far above the standards set by their teamates.

Players can be injured for a year, and Lambert wanted to blood the kids.

Richard Dunne the new Frank McLintock? Maybe?

McLintock was old when he arrived at QPR ,but had a lot to offer still. He was a good defender. Dunne is no comparison. A worn out old cart horse of a player who should be put out to pasture. He's had his day. His showings for the ROI in the Euro Finals demonstrated the type of player he has become.

Would have said yes to him about 10 years ago, but not now.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

We have the young bloke we got from Portsmouth

I completely forgot about that bloke. Tried checking the offish to find his name but had to scrawl through too many first team players - still wiping the vomit off myself...

Dunne clearly seems like HR's fairly unimaginative attempt to get a Nelsen type in there. Which isn't really needed, imo, because Clint can do perfectly well at Champ level next season.

Would far rather get a Matt Connolly type for the long term - a Matt Connolly type that we actually keep this time.

I don't think there's any way Samba will still be here next season - he'll be sold to free up cash for HR or HR successor's wheeling and dealing - especially now that Remy's situation is fcuked up.

Yeah but everyone was going crazy over Granero, Park, SWP, and Diakite was bound to be the best of the bunch. By the end of the season, none of them could get a place ina relegation bound team.

Is Dunne not a leader? I thought he was one of these characters that is supposed to be a leader on and off the pitch, surely that is exactly what we need, given we have a dressing room full of factions including those that are supposed to be the leaders in the team
