New Name On The Saints Shortlist To Replace Ivan Juric
Thursday, 10th Apr 2025 20:41

Danny Rohl is report ably the top name to be he next permanent manager of Southampton, closely followed by Leroy Rosenior, but there is a new name being touted as a contender, one that many Saints fans won't be familiar with.

givemesport.co.uk have been suggesting that there is a third name on the shortlist to take over the hot seat at St Mary's and it is one that few will have heard of.

The man in question is Will Still manager of RC Lens in France.

The 32 year old is British, although he was born in Belgium to British parents.

He played for lower League Belgium clubs, before switching from playing to managing, starting off managing the U14's at Preston whilst studying at a college nearby, following his return to Belgium in 2014, he started to rise up the ranks in a series of jobs at clubs in the Belgium Pro league.

After de camping to Reims in France, he became caretaker manager at the club in October 2022 and started to build his reputation.

After taking Reims to 11th in Ligue 1 in 2023/24, he left by mutual consent to join Lens in June 2024.

At Lens he has prospered even more, taking the side to 11th in Ligue 1, despite having to sell players and now it seems he is on Saints radar and the mysterious third candidate after Rohl & Rosenior..

It's Liam Nick, not Leroy. Leroy is possibly his dad?

Yes felly Leroy is his dad. This sounds like one of those risky choices that SR is very fond of. I would go for a bit more experience but what do I know...

Will Still, and even Rosenoir are perhaps names unknown to many of us, and I am certainly not against the concept of " young managers " but I would want to see more than just " a good season or two in a foreign league" before employing someone who didn't have a real career in the English game - regardless of the level, and with the hope / prospect of a quick return to .." the best League in the World ".
We would all praise Russell Martin for his great efforts last season, but the reality of top class football hit hard in just a few months, and he was clearly out of his depth.
Not sure that Rohr is the best name - even though he has some background with the club, but i would go for experience and even the prospect of the (hitherto) unsuccessful Steven Gerrard might help us turn the corner, if he and Lallana could use their successful Liverpool experiences to good use.

I have followed Will Still for about 5 years He going to be something special IMO
Was hoping we would go for him when Ralph finished
I think we would find him exciting but is L1 in France better or worse than the Championship
