Cameron Burgess : A major upgrade on Harry Darling ‘News behind the news’ Saturday, 14th Jun 2025 18:04 by Liam Walters & Keith Haynes Cameron Burgess has signed for the Swans as an out of contract player on a three year deal. His time will start on July 1st and the Swans are absolutely delighted to beat so many other clubs classed as far bigger than them to get this over the line. With Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna stating two days ago, "I think irrespective of whatever happens in the summer, Cameron's always going to go down in the folklore of this club now," This transfer is one every Swans supporter should be happy about. We have been told his competitiveness, the fact he is left footed at centre back, huge leadership qualities and of course a current Australian international heading for the World Cup in 2026 all mattered in the clubs search for a Harry Darling replacement. Now in talks with Glasgow Rangers (sources) We had news on Cameron yesterday morning, and although it wasn’t as concrete as we would have liked and very difficult to firm up that slowly sneeked out over today. However, it was only speculation in the main. Again, the club are doing a much better job of suppressing leaks, but there’s a big world out there away from Swansea. However we got something on Twitter around fifteen minutes before the announcement, believing it could be Cameron Burgess, but not one hundred percent, we just knew something was coming. It’s not really about that though, but just to annoy see below.
That aside the now ex Ipswich Town centre back was the Swans number one target. Now we can say that he has been monitored for six months by the club with only Valencia at the time being a contender. All this time Ipswich did hold conversations with Burgess, his agent was determined to get another three year deal for him. Unfortunately for Ipswich nothing seemed to be agreed. A phone call to a contact in that area revealed this over the last few hours. As the club site has now officially reported, head of analytics & global recruitment, Adam Worth, said, “Moving into this summer we were aware of the need to try and ensure we complement the youthful element of our squad with players who are proven performers at this level. Cameron undoubtedly meets that criteria, and arrives with us fresh from playing in the Premier League with Ipswich. We are excited to see what he can bring to Swansea City in the coming season and the years ahead.” For us reviewing our external information over the past three or four months it seems that Swansea City have someone in the mix with a clear eye on the identity and type of player Swansea City wants. That’s five in now, and backs up our claims from a few weeks ago that the Swans don’t need to sell to recruit. The substantial signing on fee which is spread over the players contract plus his agents fee - with more to come in that we know about puts that to bed. Despite loans at numerous clubs and a career which started at now named, Perth Red Star it was a long haul for Burgess. Joining Ipswich and despite being born in Aberdeen his family links are in Australia, moving there as an eleven year old. As mentioned he is a full international. He will wear the number fifteen jersey for the Swans. The same shirt number he wore at Ipswich. The history behind this signing makes this latest player coming in at the Swans even more remarkable. Ipswich Town tried to retain him, Glasgow Rangers most certainly wanted dialogue and Spanish club Valencia were serious contenders right up to the last minute. As reported by ElDesmarque, a news site with a reputable profile in Spain, Valencia CEO Ron Gourlay met with the Australia international and his agent Colin Murdock (Indy source) last week to discuss a potential move to the Mestalla. The link there with Gourlay is he is a native of Dundee with a very high profile himself in business hence his position at Valencia. One Scotsman with a valid interest in quality players. Girona too were there or thereabouts but couldn’t match what the Swans and Valencia were offering. ![]() Speaking to the head of FansNetwork and owner, Gavin Wilding of the extremely successful Ipswich Town website TWTD he tells us, ‘You have one hell of a signing there’ In fact you won’t find many Ipswich fans saying any different. Again this signing as we stated on Twitter (X) is a real coup. The Tractor Boys recruited him from Accrington in 2021, and this after him being at Oldham, Fulham, Scunthorpe United, Ross County, Bury, Salford and Cheltenham on loan. His career flourished at Portman Road and he was instrumental in the climb from League One to the Premier League. What does this mean for Swansea City ? That’s the low down on Cameron that we have at this moment in time. But surely any doubters as to the Swans focus for next season can be discounted for now ? Especially as business is not completed, and the possibility of three more permanent transfers to come in plus a loan signing which is still under review. It’s full steam ahead. ![]() Photographs : MT1IMGOSP000BJZSMJ & MT1IMGOSP000053AN5 Licensed from Reuters Please report offensive, libellous or inappropriate posts by using the links provided.
