Just back from new York on overnight flight and all children should be on a separate plane, maybe attached and towed like a glider. One family tried to keep 3 kids aged between 6 months and 4 fed, entertained and quiet , they failed miserably :( Spending thousands flying kids long haul is insane and should be illegal.

but I do kill flies - in my defence I had an infestation down the chimney (ooer) one year and it was the most revolting thing I've ever had to deal with

Deliberately avoided taking mine on long flights until they were past toddler age. Agree it's even worse for parents, except that is the tossers on our recent flight to London who made no effort at all to comfort their screaming child. Bastards. 14 hours.
thats actually the bit that irks me more than the actual crying, ive been on plenty of journeys or meals in restaurants where ive sat next to people with a toddler thats screaming the house down but the parents act as if its not happening. in a restaurant i once witnessed parents turn the stroller away from their table towards everybody else rather than try and pacify the child. i get that kids have a lot of energy and cry etc thats understandable but its the parents that act like its not happening that bother me

Dennis Nilsen loved his dog... and I'm assuming you were a child once Deano, are you mad at your parents for their selfish act of carnal lust? lol.
I have 2 kids, and have taken them to Australia and Thailand, we're pretty hot on discipline and are well aware of where we are and the people who are around us when we are on a plane — the first thing I do is address those sitting around and explain that we're not totally sure of how this is going to play out, but we'll do our best to manage it for all their sakes. That generally gets a few comments of 'oh don't worry about it etc etc'. The kids have been okay, a few moments of tears and tantrums, but we are definitely conscientious and considerate when we do these things. All my family live in Oz, and my sister recently got married in Thailand, so both trips were unavoidable, but its not something I relish or plan to do with too much regularity... its very stressful. I do agree with Dave B though, taking children on planes long-haul or not is a means to an end in regards to making memories as a family and giving them experiences that we weren't afforded when we were their age.
In regards to the original point of kids on a plane it has more to do with how respect, tolerance and understanding you give towards other people - irrespective of choices you make or choices they make, both are subjective and personal. It isn't selfish to have children, it isn't selfish not to have children, but at the end of the day its respecting each others choices and doing your best not to rub your own beliefs in other peoples faces, or forcing your situation on them unnecessarily.
Personally I don't know what I did before I had kids - not a lot worthwhile anyway. Having kids gives me a purpose and loads of enjoyment as well as challenges. Don't get me wrong, i do really really really look forward to having a night away with the missus, and having a lie-in free from CBeebies and Milkshake... plenty of time for that when they grow up a bit I guess.

The only way to end this this insane nightmare is either castration, hysterectomies or vasectomies. It's the only way to be sure of silence on long haul flights. Amen.
or age limits on certain flights - some airlines are thinking about it.

I am sorry to hear about your lad. I wish him well and hope that he comes through stronger and goes on to have a happy and successful life (a socially and environmentally considerate one of course ) . It must be terrible for him to be ill at such a young age and I have every sympathy for him.
I was going to enter into further debate something else you have said in your post, but I think it's best to park it otherwise it will all kick off again.
Yeah it's best to park it Deano, that's the most sensible thing you've said.

Not bothered with this thread. Did one nightmare flight to Cairo, 5 hours with a family behind, kids kicking my seat all the way. Egypt was just post Arab Spring and to compound the threat the Yanks killed Bin Laden the night I was flying out. Never been so glad to see WH Smiths at Heathrow in my life.
Anyway, 8 Russian bombers intercepted in commercial flight space last week off Blighty, they flew down to Portugal and came back the way they came. I'd say toddlers on flights are the least of flying concerns currently.
