Good and detailed interview with MW in the Athletic today 13:13 - Oct 14 with 8588 views | DevonWhite | Really good piece by Jack Pitt-Brooke. Clive, are we allowed to post the full thing here for those that don't have a subscription? A few accompanying tweets from JPB with some interesting points: Jack Pitt-Brooke @JackPittBrooke I spent some some time with QPR boss Mark Warburton. He told me: -Why possession is an "irrelevant stat" -Why he has banned players from shooting from distance or taking the ball into the corner -How human beings learn as a species @JackPittBrooke I thought over the summer that QPR might go down this season. But they've kept Eze and other key players, overhauled the squad, and Warburton is starting to instill his football. Early days but it looks very different from what I expected... @JackPittBrooke It shows that whatever the level - and QPR have one of the smallest wage bills in the Championship - if you want to over-achieve you need an identity. Which is something they haven't really had since... the Neil Warnock promotion season?

Good and detailed interview with MW in the Athletic today on 11:00 - Oct 15 by Northernr | When you can pay for your weekly shop with profile let me know. The athletic's model is proper, in depth, long form journalism for a small monthly fee. They're willing to invest in good journalists and proper content, with no adverts, but in return you pay them a couple of quid. That model breaks if people start copying and pasting the articles everywhere. The journo may well be happy his pieces has gone down well, and the occasional freebie to draw in other subscribers might work, but if his articles were persistently available for free everywhere why would the athletic pay him? |
Got it. The reason I was asking was that I c&p a whole article from the irish independent on athletics on here recently because somebody was firewalled on it and when I read this thread It got me thinking was I wrong to post it. Clearly I was.
Good and detailed interview with MW in the Athletic today on 13:36 - Oct 15 with 1713 views | R_from_afar | I don't agree with the idea of not taking the ball into the corner. It's ugly but it has to be done sometimes. I can never forget that game against West Brom when we had - miraculously - nicked a goal and were leading with barely any time left. We got up the field and rather than trying to keep the ball in the corner, Pellicori (sigh) and A N Other R decided it would be a good idea to try and score when heavily outnumbered. West Brom got the ball back, swept upfield and scored. Wallop. Two points squandered.
| "Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1." |

To be honest I imagine Pellicori would have struggled to take and keep the ball in the corner and lost it in either scenario. Not shooting from long range sounds sensible to me, just because there's nothing on doesn't mean we should give away possession, keep the ball until there is something on.

I don't necessarily disagree with you but Warburton works by numbers so he'd say yeh, you remember that occasion which was ten years ago and involved a fcking awful footballer, but you're statistically less likely to have a problem that way than doing it the other.

Wasnt it pellicori who scored that thunderbolt V Birmingham in the snow to make it 1-0? It was the only thing he ever did!

Good and detailed interview with MW in the Athletic today on 14:30 - Oct 15 with 1647 views | PhantomSpecialist | It;s nice to see after years of cheap talk and broken promises, the team finally seems to have a recognisable philosophy/playing style. It's also really refreshing to hear our manager talk in depth about a style of play we're ACTUALLY playing (Hasselbaink's 'pressing' comes to mind) The thing I took most from the interview was that MW feels chances created is a far more relevant stat than possession, which I totally agree with. Of course, the more you have the ball, the more likely you are to create chances but as we saw against Cardiff and Bristol City, possession doesn't automatically mean chance creation. The Man City's and Liverpool's of the world usually have 55%+ possession but they always create chances, even in games they lose. Against the better sides (i.e. the ones we've lost to this season) we haven't been able to turn possession into goals, but I'm sure that will come. Hope we stick with Mark for a while (not that anything ever sticks around at QPR for long) and should he leave, I hope we appoint a manager with a similar footballing philosophy and ingrain it into the club à la Swansea in the late 2000's. QPR always feels more like QPR when we play positive attacking football.

We lost a point v Liverpool at home in equally stupid circumstances. 30 seconds left - free kick 30 yards from goal. 1)Hammer it, its a worldy or 99% more likely ball goes in our crowd, game over. 2) Play the ball into the corner - game over or 3) Try a little dinked cross, don't have enough players covering any break including one of the best/fastest prospects around who used to play for us and oh whatever you do after all that don't score an own goal Guess what happened and YES it DOES still bug me! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He wasn't advocating all out attack but that rather holding onto possession around the pitch will keep your defensive shape better and as the other team are chasing the game they could well make a mistake

or don't send all your defenders up for the free kick and make sure you have cover against a side very good on the break who had already scored once in similar circumstances.

Ther guilty man had nowhere near his ablility! Step forward Letoy Fer. Why we let him near the ball is a mystery! It is far better retaining the ball wirth numerous short passes than waltz into the corner & have a free kick given against us at the frst chance.
Good and detailed interview with MW in the Athletic today on 09:42 - Oct 16 with 1282 views | NW5Hoop | When you take it into the corner you almost always lose possession far quicker than you would have had you continued to play normal football. It's one of the things that's so blindingly obvious when you watch football that I am amazed footballers don't seem to have worked it out. On the sharing of full texts … Please don't. As someone who writes for a living, I love it when people share links, or say how much they liked a piece. But copying and pasting text in full just makes it less likely you'll have those pieces to read in future. Because if no one can make money off them (either through subscriptions or ad views), then they can't pay anyone to write them. And profile? Why do people always say profile is such a good thing for journalists? Profile in the industry, yes. But not profile for the sake of it. We're having some building work done. I might tell the builders that if they do it for free I'll tweet about them, and it will be good for their profile, and see how that goes down. [Post edited 16 Oct 2019 10:24]

It was the Redknapp 'era' v Liverpool. Caulker scored the own goal, can't remember who took the idiotic free kick
