More good news Vitamin D boosting your Immune system can mean less severe symptoms and actually save you from dying.

As I understood it what generally kills people is an overly strong immune reaction that does more damage than the virus. A cytokine storm.

It's the thing that's made me quite wary of this. I'm almost never ill. Less than a dozen sick days in 20+ years of working. Last time I had the flu was more than a decade ago. My immune system is like a bolshy doorman. Almost nothing gets in. Yet that might work against me with this.

We just don't understand it well enough.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

You may well be correct about the situation in the ski school, and the child seemed to attend three. It has been about 30 years since I was last in a Ski School but I seem to remember about 15 - 20 kids in a class, so it could well be that around 60 of their contacts were outside, were other children and wearing masks which is a difficult environment to spread Covid. Potentially that could still leave in excess of 100 outisde of that environment who didn't catch Covid from them, plus of course this is one child in a study of many.

Very early days but definitely something which could make social distancing more bearable for many people. I am one of those - so forgive my optimistic bias.

Ha never been skiing myself just guessing, but I imagine daddy the super spreader or one of the other infected would be with a kiddy under 10 a lot of the rest of the time, and when back here with the illness would need to isolate with family, could not really count their shared contacts because daddy definitely super infective. But of course as you say many other cases seem to indicate an absence.

That half term certainly seemed a real boost to the virus.

Never apologise for optimism it is a wonderful attribute. We are all desperately hoping for the best and a screen is no replacement for feeling those pudgy little arms tight around your neck in a big hug, so let’s hope really hard.

The kid that the research is based on wasn’t the child of the super spreader. It was the child of two people who were on holiday with the super spreader. Both parents and the 9 year old caught the disease, the child had over 170 contacts all of who were placed in isolation, and only 1 of those contacts developed the disease, and the French investigating this cluster said the 1 didn’t catch it from the initial child.

I posted previously, had been suggested lack of vitamin D was possibly a contributor to those with darker skin seeming more susceptible, because the excessive protection darker skin provides against our weaker sun, leaves lower levels of vitamin D than more pasty bods. And vitamin D important to immune system.

Doctor was actively suggesting those with darker skin should take vitamin D supplements.

Thanks, I took the fact that the super spreader was the parent from an earlier reply to me ,so assumed that correct.

Interesting, but I thought I had read that many of those contacts were through ski school, which all the previous protections I mentioned against spreading it in that environment (outside, masks, other children less likely to become infected...) apply.

Of course shared contacts with parents / other group members would presumably be a confounding factor, so not included (given if others not picking it up from infected adults ,then it would not be right to infer child non infective)?

As said fingers crossed, as this would certainly be a big leap forward.

Those with lighter skin who are isolating because they are extremely vulnerable should consider vitamin D supplements as well. Especially those without gardens and not mobile enough to take outdoor exercise.

Pretty encouraging figures in Wales today. 160 new cases, with 1090 tests undertaken. That is the least number of new cases (except a couple of days of very low test numbers) in a month and the 4th highest number of daily tests.

We're definitely getting there.

A drop in new cases is very welcome. 1090 tests is pathetic when England will do around 100,000 today.

"Swansea's Liberty Stadium Car Park to be Turned into Coronavirus Testing Centre"

"A Coronavirus testing unit for health and social care staff will be developed at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium.

Work on the drive-through unit, the second in the Swansea Bay area, is due to start next Wednesday (May 6th) and should be finished just two days later.

The six-lane facility will complement the testing unit at Margam in Port Talbot, which opened in early March.

Around 120 people a day can be tested at the Margam unit, while the Liberty will be able to test up to an additional 360 people daily.

It’s yet another example of fantastic partnership working in these difficult times, with Swansea Bay University Health Board, Swansea Council and Swansea City AFC joining forces at the Liberty.

The Liberty testing unit will be located in the VIP car park and will have its own dedicated vehicle entrance. Other car parking areas around the Liberty Stadium will not be affected.

Please note that this for health and social care staff who will be attending by appointment only. It is not for the general public."

Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

It is indeed. Of course Drakeford just gave up on trying to achieve his target when he realised he wasn't going to meet it.

Yet more PHEIC news I see. The totals announced today were at a UK not England level and incorporate those undertaken by the NHS in the devolved nations and in England, but also a new UK-wide testing program. An unspecified number of those tests will have been carried out in Wales, with Cardiff currently the only test centre. In Scotland nearly half of the tests currently being carried out are under the new UK-wide scheme.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-52471298

"The NHS [in Scotland] tested 2,537 people on Thursday, with a further 2,124 being tested at the UK government's drive through centres across the country - a total of 4,661 tests, which is well below the current total capacity of about 8,350."

England hasn't done that. The way tests are counted was changed by the government this week, according to the journal, so that tests sent to people’s homes, but not yet returned for processing, are included in the figures.

Yeah, it's about 89,000 plus any that have been returned.

Wales have done a pathetic 1100 or so.

My point stands.

No evidence formally presented yet, it would be very early for that. But there has been a study sponsored by the Royal College of Paediatricians (although at the moment published via a blog) which cannot identify a single case of a child under 10 passing the virus on.

It seems to be a large study of thousands of cases across China and Europe. One example used in the media is the child of the first UK case, who had been in close contact with almost 200 people. Many had caught a common cold from him but none caught Covid, despite Covid being more contagious .

It is obviously too early to be sure, and more research is needed, but Switzerland are acting on it and allowing children close contact with grandparents.

If young kids could go to school and see family members at some point before too long, without increasing the risk of transfer, it would be massive for people and an economic boost.
[Post edited 1 May 2020 7:33]

This is interesting as initially they thought kids were the big spreaders and caused so many of the problems in Italy when they shut the schools, by going to stay with their grandparents. Maybe it wasn’t the kids after all? A lot of families co habit over there (parents/grandparents etc) making it very difficult to keep the oldies away from younger people.
