Sorry for new thread,
But how bad do you lot reckon it’s going to get here in the UK?
I just been watching the news. Looking nasty in Italy.

My methods are not favoured by some but by god i speak the truth.

Yes they have now gone from ‘follow the science’ to ‘Feck the science’. Ain’t that the truth ?

Plus that idiot woman has gone.

Of course they are following the science, but it is someone else's science.
Which has been the problem from day one, who to believe.

Slow weren't they.
But the rest of the world will carry on saving lives by using the drugs as recommended by the medical profession.
I assume that you are aware that the FDA is now being sued by that same medical profession?

Whilst it is disappointing but not unexpected that Hydroxychloroquine seems to have fallen by the wayside.
There seems to be a clear breakthrough in the use of Dexamethasone from the recovery trial - currently on the bbc website. I can't pretend to know anything about it, but cuts death rates by a 3rd if on a ventilator and by a 5th for those on oxygen.
Could have saved 5000 lives if used from the start in the UK. Excellent news.

The most serious cases undergo what is called a 'cytokine storm'. Cytokines are the messengers of the immune system. They are produced by cells and have effects that turn on or turn off functions in cells and tissues, activate cells to kill invaders or cancer cells. cause some types of cell to proliferate etc. There are quite a large number which can be roughly grouped by function. In a cytokine storm excessive amounts of pro-inflammatory cytokines like Interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6, Il-8 and tumor necrosis factor are produced. These recruit inflammatory cells like neutrophils and cause dilation, leakiness of blood vessels and blood clotting. A corticosteroid like dexamethasone (a similar drug to beclamethasone in inhalers) reduces the inflammation. and damage. They are, however, suppressive to normal immune function so not a great drug to prevent infection (prophylactic). It looks positive but again, as I repeat, you can't cure viral infections by treatment with a few exceptions. Merely control them.

Thanks Prof.
So basically it will save some lives until we get a vaccine, which will hopefully happen at some point and preferably as soon as possible.

Yes-looks to be clear a clear reduction in deaths and better than any other treatment tried. Relatively little side effects too

I have heard on the grapevine that we should know in September if the 'Oxford' vaccine has any benefit and that GSK have capacity to provide enough doses for the UK within a month if needed.

Sarah Gilbert is doing a Q&A tomorrow I’ve been sent an invite thing to.

They’ll know sooner than September apparently.

And AZ (GSK are involved in another vaccine, not the Oxford vaccine) are already manufacturing.

My bad. Astra Zeneca- you are right.

I have heard there is a delay as the trials in the U.K. have struggled due to the drop off in cases. Some additional work now being done in Brazil. Also heard that the Imperial vaccine may be the business so to speak, but a less proven in terms of its tech. We shall see. All promising as is the treatment which won’t cause the problems around chloroquine and its
Derivatives

Yes, they’ve given 2000 doses in Brazil.

Hopefully both vaccines end up working (plus many others). I think Imperial trials are starting tomorrow? We’ll need a few of these to work in all probability.

A friend of mine (Oxford medic) is attending the Q£A tomorrow (which is why I got sent the link). I’ll be interested to hear what she says after listening in to Sarah Gilbert.

Was talking to a flu Immunology specialist yesterday. Like me he thinks the Oxford
Vaccine is a short term answer, but one that can stop re-emerging infections
Enough to control for the next 18 months to get to a vaccine
With more effective protection. Let’s hope so

Buying 18 months of time to get back to some sort of normality would be a great start.

I've been taking it for a few months.

No noticeable side effects.

Just watched the press conference. Did any of you check the rolling news reporting along the bottom of the screen.

It said that schoolchildren in England will now be getting free school meals during the Summer holidays. It then said that Wales, Scotland and NI have also agreed to fund this.

So the impression given is that England led while the others agreed/followed. No mention of the fact they had to be dragged screaming to this point by the efforts of a Premier League footballer while FOLLOWING the lead of the devolved Nations.

Pathetic.

Not really. Consensus is there in most scientists. Perhaps if they had gone beyond a small coterie of LSHTM, Imperial and Oxbridge it may have been clearer.

Not quite, apparently it's these guys - Association of American Physicians and Surgeons...

"The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) is a conservative non-profit association founded in 1943. The group was reported to have about 5,000 members in 2014. The association has promoted a range of scientifically discredited hypotheses, including the belief that HIV does not cause AIDS, that being gay reduces life expectancy, that there is a link between abortion and breast cancer, and that there is a causal relationship between vaccines and autism. It is opposed to the Affordable Care Act and other forms of universal health insurance.
