Although Kilk is pretty much right in that case. We took a position despite the scientific advice, not necessarily because of it. The science didn't change yet our position did. I hope this will all come out in the wash eventually. There'll no doubt be a review of how different countries responded, and hopefully some lessons learnt that will make people better prepared if/when something like this happens again. It's not just Planet Swans - society's becoming increasingly tribal. We've a way to go before we get as bad as the US, but we're following the same path (not surprising, as some of the agitators are the same people).

Corona Virus on 08:56 - Mar 26 by Brynmill_Jack | Unfair on Corbyn. I don’t even know why you’re brining his name into it . He would still have to deal with people flouting advice as we’re seeing with Johnson’s advice right now. For the record Johnson may have got the herd mentality thing totally wrong but this is unknown territory. Even though I despise the tories and their defenders I hope what’s being done works. |
I brought Corbyns name into it because some posters have claimed he would have done better. We'll never know, I personally doubt it but it's impossible to prove either way, being wise after the event is no proof. Despite what is happening and some people still behaving tribally re politics, hasn't this virus actually healed some of the brexit rift? Hasn't Corona brought people back together even if only a little bit? The government asked for volunteers and over 500,000 stepped up with more still doing so. We are seeing random acts of kindness and a generosity of spirit that brexit seemed to have crushed. Long may it last. Edit, 560,000 volunteers in 24 hours, an incredible altruistic reaction. Seems to me that going against scientific advice is precisely what we're not doing. At yesterdays press conference Johnson stuck with the slogans and deferred any technical question to Whitty & Vallance. Remains to be seen whether that advice is right, but for me we're definitely being led by the specialists. As you say, come the end of this there will be big international discussions about what happened and where we went right/wrong. Until then it's pointless pointing the finger as so many people seem desperate to do, largely for political point scoring purposes.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

Apparently we've changed how we're reporting the numbers and now require consent from next of kin to add people to the daily count. Might create even more noise in the data than there already is. [Post edited 26 Mar 2020 11:28]

It's a flimsy excuse that makes little sense but nonetheless the reporting is changing. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

And effectively making it worthless. No better than the number of confirmed cases. I think the number of fatalities needs to be reported as is - even if it is just to scare the rest of us in to action.

Yes. The best scientific advice is now being acted upon and especially the massive increases in testing. The initial problem (and I lay this at Cummings and Vallance) was taking an extremes and risky position within the science. I would believe that most, if not all, past PMs and indeed Corbyn would have followed the best consensus. That said, since the change in position the government have been pretty decent in their actions. It is the lateness that despairs us scientists.

The problem is not helped by the dramatically changing positions of, as an example, the Imperial team, who have now turned yet again.

I think it despairs most of us. It just seemed logical to stop flights from badly hit areas from being allowed to disembark and go home with no testing. The airports and seaports should have been locked down straight away. That's not even hindsight for several on here, it was being said. The uncomfortable truth is though, we are where we are. How are people coping with lockdown? We're lucky to have a decent garden. I feel sorry for anyone who can't get outdoors frequently. I am back and fore to the garden regularly, it is getting tidier and it's preventing my descending into insanity

Your point about the sustainability of a lockdown is interesting, Prof Chris Whitty said this early on, that the toughest measures need to come in at the right time as they are not sustainable for a long period and could do more harm than the virus.

That's a consequence of the nature of epidemiological models. They need data to feed the beast. The modelling I have been involved in (actually a network model of immune responses) used several thousand data sets we had generated over 3 years experimental work and remarkably was pretty accurate. The Imperial team (who developed the FMD models in 2001) tend to be pessimistic in initial outlook. That said I have never seen a predictive model work that well in a stochastic biological system. Ulimately you can only stop and outbreak by blocking transmission routes or making a population resistant or immune

Well this may be a sensible measure to protect next of kin, with no hospital visits people will be wondering if todays figures include their relative.

Understood. But to go in two weeks from where they were to where they are as of today is astonishing. The issue on which they appear to have changed stance in on the subject of levels of infection. I found it interesting that when Johnson raised the Oxford University study in the daily briefing yesterday, the CMO / CSA didn’t write it off (as I expected them to do), but instead stressed the importance of anti body tests (which of course they are). Imperial have pivoted in the last 24 hours towards a belief that there may be some truth in it as well.

Lisa - lets be honest, you have been asleep at the wheel throughout this pandemic. You have consistently been ill informed and incorrect. You bury your head in the sand if you like. Resorting to personal abuse is a cheap shot, but i guess you already know that. The people on this thread who are helping to hold this government to account are the people who want to see the Govt succeed, or why bother ? I hate to tell you this but just wishing for something rarely works. Mostly its about making hard decisions that stand up to duty scrutiny.

The Oxford study is intriguing, tough roundly dismissed by a number of scientists, in that there is much anecdotal evidence of many people (including all of my household) with a less progressive respiratory disease-plenty have said this here. Perhaps we have had a wave of lower virulent infections. As you rightly say the antibody-based test will tell us a lot about exposure. It would be great if we are at a high exposure rate as we may get some herd immunity and transmission dropping off fairly soon. I'm not entirely hopeful it will happen though. Anything below 10000 deaths would be a major result
