🇺🇸Presidential debate round 1 - “Matchday thread”🇺🇸 01:18 - Sep 29 with 234794 viewsDr_Parnassus

Who will be watching? First one kicks off in 24 hours time.

The Democrats have pulled Joe back from his campaign trail recently to get him prepared, so hopefully it will be a decent exchange.

Unfortunately they don’t seem to have great confidence as they have spent the last month looking for any dirt they can dig up so Joe can use if he gets stuck.

It’s no coincidence that this vote influencing Facebook algorithm story is being shamelessly and inaccurately made into a race issue on the eve of the debates. So transparent and disingenuous, it’s a shame politics has come to this on this level where black people are being used in this way to score political points. I would be furious if I was them, but it does seem a lot of people are not falling for this one and calling it out for what it is.

People finally seem to be getting wise to this political race baiting which is refreshing to see.

It’s also telling that in the week of the debate they try and paint Trump as a tax evasion offender. I think that’s what they wanted the tax returns to show, they seem to have got annoyed when it turns out his tax returns were fine in accordance to what his companies profits were - but decided to run with it anyway. Any news is good news in their mind as it’s another thing Joe can use when in a tricky spot.

But I hope the discussions remain political and doesn’t turn into some form of gossip peddling reality TV episode.

Although I think there should be some kind of drinking game involved if it does turn that way, how many times Biden completely loses his thread of thought and blurts out “I mean, think about it...” you have to take a shot.

I will be watching with great interest anyway.

I bet the black harvest of warlocks on here are absolutely boiling inside seeing their leader making a fool of himself.

You lot may come up with long winding paragraphs of piffle sometimes with a link suiting their narrative but it's all in vain as your orange peeled faced despot I hope will be taken kicking and screaming from the white shortly.

Btw did you all see the incumbent presidents latest speech? A speech not about himself but about how hes going to bring his country together and not divide it as has happened over the last few years, now that to me is what a leader does, brings people together, not divides.

Well I look forward to how he and she are going to achieve that.(or should that be the other way round ) Anyway the country's going to feel the affects of this election and the run up to it for a long time .good luck US you're going to need it .

I reckon the longer this election fuss goes on the more likely a fast return to ‘normal’ will be afterwards.

The Republicans and right leaning press (Murdoch’s lot) are increasingly moving away from Trump. If he keeps behaving in the way has over the last few days he’ll end up detached from reality - they can put him, his family, and star of Borat, Rudy, in a box and ignore them.

The election has clearly shown a thirst for Republican policies, nobody can deny that and it’ll be a lot easier for them to pursue their goals without trump weighing them down.

I love the way that all the anti Trumpers have suddenly appeared to make their anti Trump statements.
As to his not accepting this obviously tainted result I refer you to Al Gore the Democrat candidate for the 2000 presidential election who called for a recount not once, not twice, but 3 times.
Precedence was set by a Democrat.

You are deluded and do not understand the depth of feeling of the Trump supporters.
They do not appreciate having their election stolen from them.

Can you show me Trumps speech where he says he is going to divide the country? I can show you many where he says the country should be united.

Well by saying Biden gave a speech saying how America should be united and “that’s how to lead a country” suggests he think Trump has not said the exact same thing or indeed said the opposite. If he didn’t mean that then it has no place in the point he was making. Pretty simple.

Biden has a history of plagiarism when it comes to ideas and speeches... doesn’t he.

As an aside, if they are the party of non divide... it’s odd Kamala Harris was encouraging rioting, even suggesting people donate to a bail fund to bail criminals out after burning people’s homes and businesses down.

Sounds a lovely way to bring people together.

Despite the accusations, Trump has failed to produce any evidence which would support his allegations. The Republican Party, put up a decent show and held their own evening winning a few important positions, surely if there was going to be large scale fraud the Democrats would have made sure they took control of the Senate and strengthened their grip in the House of Representatives neither of which they appear to have achieved.

Lots of senior Republicans distancing themselves from Trump. They may feel the election has been stolen from them, but as yet they have not produced any evidence, the allegations are just pushing their society nearer to civil disorder.

Intersting piece

Abstract

While often hailed–or denounced–as unprecedented, the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump was not ahistoric. This article positions the Trump campaign in historical traditions of right-wing populism, incendiary political language, and insulting rhetoric. Trump’s mocking and insulting rhetoric in the campaign was widely described as both norm-breaking and, surprisingly, not politically harmful. This article challenges both assumptions, illustrating how Trump fits into a long tradition of insult politics, and how it remains controversial and politically dangerous. The insult politics Trump utilized throughout his campaign served a political purpose. However, there are strong indications that Trump won the White House in spite of his mocking rhetoric, not because of it. Rather, the particular political position of Trump, and his media image, explains how he could utilize insult politics to his advantage. The initial unwillingness of the other candidates to engage in insult politics, as well as the backlash against those who eventually did, further illustrates the problems inherent in the use of insulting and mocking language

Perhaps this bit might pique your interest...or are you firmly entrenched in your thought siloh.

"Right-wing populism emerged in force in the 1940s as a reaction toward the left-wing populism of labor unions, socialists, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The two most renowned populists of the 1930s, Father Coughlin and Huey Long, were both initially devout followers of Roosevelt. Sharing in the populist tradition of hostility toward corporate power and wealthy elites, both men hoped the new president vowing to lift the country out of the Great Depression could also change the economic structure of the nation. Soon enough, however, they became convinced that FDR was no longer an ally of the cause and saw his political compromises as a sign of limited interest in the issues that had fueled his movement."
