Match Thread: Rochdale vs Gillingham on 21:24 - Dec 19 by mikehunt | We have to find a way to play against teams who press us. This will now be known throughout the division. Any team who employs that tactic and we are stuffed. Today our guys often had three men surrounding them. Where was the outlet for a simple pass to cut out three players instantly? Nope, we resort to turning back and directing the ball back towards our goal. Then when someone rushes at us we lump the ball forward - to no one. We didn’t have a target man today. So why employ the tactic? Because we don’t have any other plan? It’s a real worry. Fully fit we have a team that can just about compete but even one missing and we flounder. I fear the worst this season. The nature of our defeats are gutless and clueless. Pains me to say that. And why our home form should be so different when, without crowds, it shouldn’t make a ha’aporth of difference is also beyond me. Like some one has already said, our luck is going to run out very soon and relying on the odd flukey win isn’t going to save us. |
We will not be “fully fit” as long as McShane is in the squad. He has been crook for several seasons now and well before we signed him. 2016-17 was last time he played as many as 30 games. it was the only way we were able to sign him...no one else wanted to take the risk.

My guess is BBM was expecting/hoping McShane and Mclaughlin would be able to play at least 1 game in perhaps 3 or 4.

You don't sign players in the hope they'll give you 10-15 games a season at best, especially on a limited budget. McShane in particular will be amongst the highest earners as well, his wages would've been far better spent adding a little bit of quality at other positions throughout the squad. I'm not apoplectic about yesterday. It was just a continuation of the schizophrenic nature of our season, some great highs and some real lows. We have enough about us to keep picking up results against teams around us in the table and that should be enough. That does involve getting some players back from injury ASAP though, or a little bit of investment in January, because the paper thin depth of the squad has been truly exposed.

It would be nice if some of those occasional highs could be at the COA for a change, we havent had much to celebrate at home in the league for 3 or 4 years. Has anyone got a theory why our home form is so poor?

We've either not had the players to break teams down when they're playing more defensive away from their home, or when we have had the players we've played them far too defensively like Mr Camps etc, mixture of negative management and not enough attacking options/decent wide players

You are right that amount is far too low so perhaps it was 1 in 2 games or at least 50% of game time. Our budget constraints, will mean finding players with ability, experience and fitness that we can afford. I would sincerely like to think BBM wasn't expecting McShane and Mclaughlin would have had so little game time so far this season

Could part of the reason also be that Spotland just isn't an intimidating place for away teams to visit? If they bring a decent following it's almost akin to a home game (admittedly that doesn't explain this season). Psychologically as well, poor form at home might have started to wear on us and we're going into games almost expecting to lose? [Post edited 20 Dec 2020 14:05]

At least when the likes of Hull and Lincoln took the three points we had the consolation of thinking that we had been beaten by teams who deserved to be up there at the top of the table.

They're not a great side at all, but they did play well on Saturday. The defeat at Peterborough disappointed me more because although they're clearly a better side than Gillingham on paper, it felt like they didn't even need to get out of first gear to beat us so comfortably. Agree re: the Lincoln and Hull games though. They weren't too hard to take as we were clearly playing against a better side that were playing well in both of those games. Lincoln probably weren't at their absolute best, but we at least made them work hard for the win.

Some good points there though Saturday was more frustrating than Peterborough because defeat was more avoidable had the manager reacted to what was obvious early on. Three days later and it’s still hard to fathom why he didn’t recognise the issue and at least try to adapt to combat it.

We also never seem to do too well away at the posh. Where as at home to Gillingham we have a very good record so I think that makes it worse as well. I've got over it to some extent now we were lacking in squad members and key first teamers and those that did play didn't rise to the occasion. Let's hope we have some bodies back for the next game and everyone's up for it.

He has been a very poor player since we signed him , with only a few partial good games inbetween. As for the two sick notes , what is the point of signing players in the hope they may play a quarter of the season at best !

And just to move things on a bit further, Doncaster host Shrewsbury tonight. A win would send Donny top of the league and do us a favour by keeping Shrews from leapfrogging us if they win [Post edited 22 Dec 2020 14:53]

0-1 Huge win for the Shrews, and a result that'll have ruined many a Donny fan's Chrissy dinner (on top of everything else) Leaves us dangling by a thread again
