Merthyr Town on 00:45 - Apr 1 by BarryTownSwam | Two more years in the English system and Merthyr will, again!, go bust. The higher they climb the greater the financial investment required to stay afloat yet alone prosper. Great club and I wish them well but let’s be realistic shall we ?? |
In fairness Merthyr have been averaging 1,500 attendance this year while Barry in The Cymru Premier probably average about a third of that. It shows the power of the English pyramid system compared to the Welsh.

I suspect Merthyr will get 1500+ crowds whatever league system they play in. Proper fans who get behind the team.

Their average home crowd over last 10 years has not been 1,500. (Obviously Covid needs to be discounted to be fair). Non covid is nearer 500/600 as an average, not 1500. There has been an uptick this year. They would not have gone bust if home crowds had been 1500.

You seem to hate everything Welsh, its very very strange. It must kill you that Cymru has been to a World Cup and Euro’s over recent years. ❤️🏴 and now our womens team are also successful. The Cymru Prem is work in progress, but the standard, facilities and crowds are growing/improving. The league is only 30 years old. Its not trying to be a professional league. Its trying to be a semi-pro league of 16 teams from 26/27. Merthyr have every right to join or not in my book. I would not have offered them monies if i was the FAW. It will happen of course, Merthyr have a boom and bust history. That will repeat. Will you wish Llanelli and Ferry well as the local teams in the Cymru Prem next season ? Ferry have had over 1,000 a few times already in their first season up. Just wait until thet are in the top half of the table. Cymru South and Cymru North improving and very competitive, you must hate it !!

I don't hate everything Welsh. What ever put that silly idea into your mind? Just pointing out to you why Merthyr will not want to drop down several levels of the football pyramid to join a very low standard of football in the Cymru league. I do find it extraordinary that some people in Wales are prepared to except second best. They seem to lack ambition and the desire to improve themselves. Good luck to Merthyr and Wrexham striving to better their performances. As you point out, after 30 years, the Cymru league still has far lower attendances than the Welsh league it replaced. Their use to be far more local derbies in the old Welsh league. Teams like Haverfordwest, milford Haven, Pembrokeshire Borough, Llanelli, Ferndale, Tony Pentre etc all use to attract far bigger crowds than the Cymru league. [Post edited 7 Apr 8:50]

A lot of Welsh people carry these opinions and have done so over the decades. The valleys people who use to turn the TV aerial to HTV West to avoid hearing Welsh language news. You must remember that many Valley and urban people immigrated to Wales 200 yeas ago to work in the mines and later had sympathy with the Labour party where centralisation was the mantra. These good folks do not hate Wales h just think the English including Tory's can run Welsh affair better than the locals. This all changed in 1999 with Blair and the formation of the WAG. As we see elsewhere loyalty to the origins can go back through the generations. There has always been more money in England which has massive urban centres which are now international not English. It is the same as with the football. Skysports went to Merthyr about 15 years ago for an u21 game. The coverage was aborted as the OB van could not get to the ground. Merthyr have shown no ability to get to the EFL A few years ago they spent money of the squad and could not pay the tax bill. They had to have a whip round. They will have no difficulty beating Clevedon Devizes and co but will run into a brick wall v. Yeovil, York, Scunthorpe Maidstone etc . [Post edited 7 Apr 11:42]

Last season TNS beat Swans u21s in the final of the Nathaniel Cup - 5-1. If the Cymru Prem is a ‘a very low level of football’, then how would you describe our u21 pro players ?

That's not fair. I know he was prime minister at the time but the Wives and Girlfriends acronym coined by the press had nothing to do with Tony Blair

Merthyr were in the EFL 1920-1930. A long long time go. They have had 95 season to get back and not gone very close. Their greatest days were in Europe via the Welsh cup.
