Skype 06:50 - Apr 10 with 1337 views | PlanetHonneywood | As with most things in life, when you have an issue or you need an answer, then to Loftipedia one goes. Of all the things the IT revolution has foisted on us, Skype has arguably been the best thing for me. I've relied upon it so heavily over the last 20 years, it's impending removal is much regretted. The beauty with Skype is that you pay as you go. Whereas I'm sure a recurring fee, irrespective of usage, will come with Microsoft's Teams. Plus, I'm not a fan of Microsoft either. So, any suggestions for alternative options to allow you to call landlines from anywhere to anywhere in the world? I don't need conference facilities etc., just a like-for-like alternative. Early research pointed to something called 'Viber', anyone used that?

Skype on 06:59 - Apr 10 with 1302 views | Rsole | Zoom is usually free for 40mins with an account and WhatsApp has recently copied many of the screen sharing capabilities and is free to use with no time limit. I was pleasantly surprised when using it with a work colleague recently. You can use Google and Viber too - just depends what what you want to do when connected as to which one is the best option but you will probably find you are saving money compared to Skype. The link below explains how to transfer your contacts and lists the alternatives. https://techcrunch.com/2025/03/15/skype-shuts-down-in-may-these-are-the-best-alt

Skype on 07:49 - Apr 10 with 1184 views | BrianMcCarthy | Teams is excellent, to be fair. It's the best option I've found for work video calls. WhatsApp is good, but I always find it clunky in terms of reception and connectivity. A few friends have gone back to Facebook just for its video calling. Seems to be ok on the few occasions I've used it. Zoom is quality, but that 40-minute limit is a pain.

Similar suspects - most have a VOIP option for calling landlines too. https://windowsforum.com/threads/top-4-skype-alternatives-to-transition-before-s

Yes, we know. However, that's not the issue here.

If it's just voice calls and a PAYG approach, Viber is the best option. There are a few - 8x8, Rebtel, Vonage UK, etc - but they all have bits which might not suit.

Vvankers! I spent a while on the Microsoft site looking at how I get a refund. I've only got €5 on there, they can give it to charity, but it's the bloody principle of it that's boiled my urine. However, extrapolate that across their many users, and that's corporate theft by any other language! It's made deliberately impossible, no surprise there. A document that's a 55 minute read and then a link to their refund site mysteriously goes back up its own wazoo and doesn't actually yield anything. Anyway, I've disconnected my bank card and I don't think they're triggering auto payments any longer. So I'll be ringing landlines/mobiles to run that fooker down...Expect a call from me sometime before 5 May.
