Taken from facebook 13:36 - Apr 18 with 3709 views | Boundy | "My friend runs a small cafe in West Wales . Due to Welsh Labour increasing business rates on hospitality businesses ( they remain unchanged in England ) his business rates are increasing from £12000 to £19000! On top of this he has to find an additional £3000 for Labour’s national insurance hike and another £3000 for minimum wage increases . His profit last year was £25000 so unless he increases his charges his projected profit for this year is reduced to £12000. He works from 6am to 6pm 6 days a week. I feel sorry for him as he works so hard but I’ve told him it just isn’t worth running a business in socialist run Wales ". [Post edited 18 Apr 13:38]

Well just making the point that peer reviewed and published academic work at Oxford is not guess work. There is no equivalence to a random bloke on here saying ‘well its just an opinion poll and they are always wrong’ …. These two things are not of equal weight in a debate. Thank you for the debate.

Taken from facebook on 05:01 - Apr 20 by Kilkennyjack | I am not sure you understand how the internet works. Plaid promote a civil welshness which i think works for me. It might not work for everyone. It sinks all the DNA nonsense that OHL keeps refering to. An academic in Oxford does serious research on the Brexit vote in Wales. You dont like the findings so you guess stuff to try and discredit it. Unfortunately for you the gravitas of Oxford University trumps your guess work. Fact. I do not dictate Plaid policy and i do not own Oxford University. Both these things are true at the same time. |
Actually that shows you don't know how the internet works, peolle post all sorts of things both right and wrong. I didn't guess anything, this survey didn't involve him getting EVERY English retiree to tell him which way they voted, that's not how these things are done. He will have contacted a certain number then multiplied the results out and claim they are accurate. To start with how does he get the contact details for over 600,000 people? There's a data protection issue issue right there. University survey results can be wrong due to various factors, including statistical errors, bias, and limitations in how surveys are designed and conducted You tyourself have promoed this idea of civic Welshness on here, you know it's true. As such either you believe in it or you don't. As with many things, you pick and choose when you believe something depending on whether ot suits your argument. In this case you thumb your nose at the English retirees but on another day it'll be something you like so you'll welcome them as "civically Welsh" becvause hypocrisy runs deep in you. PS, what people voted for, it doesn't matter where they live, Welsh or English, it only matters in the context of the Uk because of the votes cast in the UK most chose leave. Those people were making a choice as British citizens which is something that we forget. [Post edited 20 Apr 17:34]

The real reason working class areas voted for Brexit in Wales was they were very concerned about the number of Europeans coming in and taking the low paid jobs, many are in working class areas. People can ague the rights and wrongs about this but it's a fact. The same applied in many working class areas in England. You will also find that the more affluent areas were against Brexit because they wanted the European workers to do the low paid jobs because not many of the locals would do it. This was my experience while working throughout the UK at the time. It was obvious to me at the time Brexit would happen, all people had to do was listen to people with opinions instead of try to force their own opinion on others, you learn more by listening than mouthing off.

I think your assessment is very accurate, but I’d also add dissatisfaction with being priced off the housing market and access to key services such as the NHS. It may be controversial, but my belief is that in many cases the migrants do work that British people simply don’t want to do. Cleaning, food industry, agriculture and caring are all examples of jobs /industries that British people don’t want to work in. The roles are mainly staffed by international workers who pay their taxes etc etc which are used to pay the state benefits of those who aren’t working.

Many of the jobs being taken by the Europeans at the time were semi skilled, basically a couple of £s over the minimum pay rate. Workers were coming in and accepting the jobs at the minimum pay rate, this is one of the main causes of the resentment. The resentment fueled the Brexit vote in many areas. It was not as simple as saying they were doing minimum rate job British workers wouldn't do, they were actually forcing down wages of jobs people were previously doing in many cases. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

What about the non-European migrants ? It was clear with the BBC news reports every night from Calais. Felt like we were being invaded. I often wonder why the BBC did this just prior to the vote ….. instead of reporting the news they seemed to be creating it. It stopped abruptly just after the Brexit vote. How very strange ?

Well most of what you post is wrong ….. So to state the obvious - yes, i support a civic welsh identity cos it makes sense to me. I also accept that an Oxford professor has said that Wales voted out - in a close vote - due to the English retirees who voted us out. Both these things can be true at the same time. Amazing isn’t it…?

Now that's the response from a mature , well balanced individual . The non acceptance of a majority vote ( no matter the size of the majority) is often difficult for those with childlike tendencies, like those of a 5 year old having their toys taken from them they have to a have a tantrum., perhaps yet another lesson by OHL which a few could learn by.

Morning It's just me being honest My son was working and living on The Hague at the vote time so it was a big issue To me , absolute madness borne out of xenophobia by many However , many , probably most voted as they thought EU was undemocratic and that's fair enough People need to move the foik on and forget bout historical , apocryphal tales of woe Ars longa Vita brevis
