Lest we forget on 16:29 - May 8 with 1255 views | SullutaCreturned | My grandfather was a Royal Marine, he served in Europe, Africa and the Far East. He came home and never talked of it because war is insanity and he wasn't insane. There are insane people who love war, they start wars and it's always the innocent who suffer the most. I reckon if my grandfather was here to see what the world has become that he'd wonder why he fought. Trump the leader of the free world, don't make me laugh. There was a wonderful, emotional story on the radio earlier. Bloke said his dad was involved in D day but would never talk about it. When it came time to do a clear out, he found a load his dad’s medals so said to him ‘Dad, you must have been a hero?’ His dad replied ‘I’m no hero, all the hero’s are still in France’

Well said. As the old saying goes … ‘If you would not send your own son to fight, then dont send the sons of others’. Also daughters, of course …

I know you've posted about your granddad before but his story and many other with similar experiences should be told and retold and never forgotten, the trouble is those who have the power to prevent these events happening very rarely ever have any idea what it's like to fight and see their mates die around them. Thanks to people like your grandad we have the freedoms we have today.

Lest we forget on 08:53 - May 9 with 1034 views | JACKMANANDBOY | I have posted this before. My Dad grew up in Manselton. He only told me these stories when he was near the end of his life. They were two friends from school, I have withheld heir surnames. Vincent used to sit next to my dad at school and was so keen to join the fight that he joined the Merchant Navy on his 16th Birthday, you had to wait until you were 18 to join the armed forces. He was assigned to a North Atlantic freighter as a deck hand. A week into his service his ship was sunk by a U Boat, Vincent and others survived. When the U Boat surfaced Vincent swam to it, but was pushed back into the sea and not seen again. His case became part of the evidence against the Nazis to prove they had a policy of killing prisoners. John joined the RAF at 18. He told his mother he worked at a training base, he was in fact a tail gunner on a Lancaster and was shot down in the chaotic RAF raid on Nuremberg on his 14th mission. Two brave young men, my dad said there wasn't a day when he did not think of them. So, I tell their stories.

He was most definitely a hero, just a humble one.

The Americans hold their servicemen in very high regard. The Cemetery in Colleville sur Mer is beautifully put together.

Yes, that generation gave us back those freedoms but todays politicians are taking them away again. Read this and SIGN the petition, my grandad and the millions of others didn't go through all that so a LABOUR government would be complicit in taking away one of oyr greatest freedoms, amnesty.org.uk/protest-isahumanright

Signed that earlier in the week after I saw it on FB. I detested the last Tory Government and I detest this current Labour party, they're washing away our heritage and the British way of life, because they have no idea what the daily life is like for the British people and neither do they care.

That's strange, they must have changed the page for some reason. Perhaps the government closed them down
