The Absurdity of It All 13:01 - May 30 with 2843 viewsJACKMANANDBOY

We get all sorts of messages from our politicians and journalists.
Europe stands with Ukraine is one we have been fed many times in many forms. The reality however is very different while people die on the battlefield European politicians are busy pumping money into Russia.
The EU sent 73 billion dollars to Ukraine in aid but paid Russia 233 billion dollars for fuel.
Russian exports of gas to the EU grew by 20 percent in 2024.

Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine has been a bit of an inconvenience for the EU and its members. They were quite happy suckling on their cheap energy until it started and you get the feeling that they'd have much preferred a quick defeat for the Ukrainians so things could get back to normal.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Watch out for the tax increases in the Autumn so we can all play our part in defeating Russia!

This is fake. The country has been living well beyond it's means for a while now and the deficits has been increasing year on year. Move to cut debts and deficits are well over due. It was started by George Osbourne with the so called "austerity" a decade ago.

Blaming Ukraine military aid is not the reason.

It was a post in satire, it's what we get told. The pile of unaffordable debt goes back to the 2008 banking crisis, good old Gordon Brown bailed out the banks without any recourse, chuck in the pandemic and we are as you say stuffed.

I saw this earlier, what puzzles me is, if we were still buying cheaper Russian fuel then why did our prices rise so sharply because of the war?

The truth is politicians all across Europe were talking the right game but all the while they have been shafting Ukraine because of money.

Imagine if the Uk had taken a similar line in 1939, Europe doesn't have leaders anymore, they have a bunch of book keepers looking for the most profitable outcome.

we may as well stop all aid and tell Ukraine to surrender or otherwise we are condemning them to a slow death.

It's a protectionist compromise, as you say, with Ukrainians being sacrificed whilst European interests are served.

At the start of the war EU told Russia it would pay $50 a barrel and no more. It was a rake or leave it offer. Russia continued to sell at a reduced price. This notionally kept the pipes flowing but was deemed not a sufficient price to fund the war. This was the logic.

It's gas too. Assuming what you say is correct then why did our prices shoot up "because of the war and the effect on supplies"?

They are lying to us, lying to Ukraine and all for money. Our costs rose anyway, it's a double deceit.

The additional costs of our drive for Net Zero have had a far bigger impact on energy prices than anything Putin has done.

I would like to know how much Dale Vince and his associated companies pay in tax every year compared to the levels of subsidy that they receive.

Starmers announcement that we should prepare for war is an unforgivable ploy by him so that tax can be raised for other pet projects such as the net zero nonsense , what PM makes comments like that but when questioned on the detail such as the amount of submarines to be built or what amount of GDP will be spent on defence spending ( an important aspect of his "ambitions" ) stutterers making vague commitments to move to 3% by the end of the next parliament, 2034, so like in the late 30's UK pre second world war we as a a nation are playing catch up .Juries out for me either we are under a considerable threat then lets deal with it if not don't use that treat as a ploy to raise yet more taxes so we can spend billions on the threat staring us right in the face.

That's a huge assumption by you. I don't agree with more spending on defence, as we are under no threat whatsoever from Russia. It's the other way round, they have been under threat from NATO

The EU gave Russia 233 billion dollars for fuel last year. The EU is subsidising Russia while we want to up our defence spending in response.

They didn't listen did they. Allowing their forces to terrorise Russians in the Donbass. Allowing in a regime hostile to Russia. Wanting to join an expansionist NATO instead of remaining neutral. Walking away from peace talks after pressure from Johnson and Biden.Allowing their military to be infested with neo nazis. With Russia being invaded many times through the Ukraine, the last thing Russia wants is neo nazi military on it's borders. Allowing themselves to be used as pawns in a proxy war

Gordon Brown also robbed pension funds which David Camerons government had to deal with, that also cost the tax payer a lot of money.

Our politicians have played (and continue to play) games with our futures.

This latest nonsense from Starmer, I have no doubt it's to try and scare us plebs into accepting there will be tax rises in October, it's either that or spending cuts so either way us plebs will suffer.

That's not quite true

The piece of evidence most often used to pin the blame on Gordon Brown is his decision to abolish a tax relief measure, called ACT, which allowed pension funds to claim back the tax paid on dividends from companies in which they owned shares.

For the financial year 1999-2000, (the last year for which figures exist) this measure was taking an annual £5.4bn out of pension funds. This is the source used in the following claim which Osborne makes later on in the same speech:

"His £5 billion tax raid on our pensions was a disaster for which pensioners will pay a heavy price for many many years to come."

This sum was partially offset by other tax reductions, but it did place a burden on pensions. And it's worth putting the size of the problem in context. The UK's hundred largest companies - which only represent a fraction of total pension liabilities - had a deficit of £36bn in their defined-benefit schemes in July this year, according to research by actuaries Clark Lane and Peacock.

So £5bn a year would only account for a fraction of the country's total pensions deficit.

What Brown did had a cumulative effect year on year on operating costs.

The deficit on funding to which you refer was not that significant, for example that was £500 Billion in 2019. Funding deficits relate to long term requirements which fluctuate according to a number of factors including actuarial assumptions.

Faced with an ageing population Brown opted to make it less attractive for businesses to provide pensions rather than tighten up on requirement A short term approach which we are paying for now.

We have a growing ageing population that will be retiring and require pensions. The pensions require funding, so those in work will either have to pay more towards them or work longer. Our state pension is poor, but workers don't want to pay more tax towards it's funding, so it's a catch 22. Any tax increase is damaging to any political party
