Superior Player of the match tells you even more.. 20% stadium capacities the appetite for this all over the world is non existent. Not sure what City and Chelsea are being paid to compete but its very likely to fook up their whole season 25/26.

To be fair, we didn't, as FA Cup replays were still in place when this competition used to take place in December, albeit in a much-reduced form. The scrapping of replays was largely as a result of expanding the in-season European competitions. [Post edited 17 Jun 21:27]

On a related note, Doesn't affect us yet but will do once we get back into the football league. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cgmj0pge82zo Apparently they need to do this because they play too many games! If only there was a way at least two of the European qualified teams could cut down between 3-7 unnecessary games. Nope, I can't think of a way either.

That’s not strictly true. The reasons for the preliminary round are two-fold. Firstly, there are more clubs in Europe next season and as they don’t enter the Carabao Cup until round three, it has a knock on effect on the number of other clubs who can join them in that round. Basically, two more teams need to be knocked out earlier. Also, which a lot of Oldham fans don’t seem to realise, is that the number of teams left in the competition has to change to a power of 2 at some point - 2, 4, 8, 16, 32…. With 92 teams competing in the Carabao Cup, some simple Maths has been applied to get to 32 teams in the third round. It will only affect us if there are still as many teams playing in Europe if/when we get back to the EFL. The reasons for the two preliminary round games comes down to Maths rather than anything else, but this wasn't communicated properly at the time the preliminary round was announced.
