Press Access to the US President 17:21 - Jun 25 with 987 views | JACKMANANDBOY | An interesting discussion on the Radio 4 Media Show, started off with an exchange about the NATO summit and what Trump had to say, BBC presenter asked if the press conference was chaotic, talk about bias. Then it got interesting US Correspondent said actually the press conference is so much better under Trump, 'we get access to Trump and can ask him whatever we want to. Under Biden access was strictly controlled and only a small number of vetted questions were allowed'. We complain about what Trump says, under Biden there was apparently no real access or transparency, we had no idea what was going on with Biden. It is on BBC Sounds if you want to hear the full discussion. [Post edited 25 Jun 17:23]

Press Access to the US President on 00:32 - Jun 26 with 907 views | DJack | There is always a limited set of press allowed to the briefings and it is usually the same groups...Trump kicked out the majority of the mainstream US press and let the very right wing "press" in their place... I suspect that you were already aware of that.

Pretty much the whole press room was all left wing. Rebalancing only the rotating pool. Everyone else, all the top outlets almost every one of which is left wing are still there. Not siding with Trump or Biden but under Biden rare access for the press and only pre agreed questions could be asked. Trump takes whatever question is thrown at him and is talking to the press most days whether its at nato or getting on his helicopter at the white house or wherever he is. So a huge improvement for press access for all sides. None of these have changed so the line about kicking press out and bringing in others is wrong Permanent Seats: Many news organizations have dedicated reporters and assigned seats in the James S. Though not as bad as I first thought back in March but you may want to read this article... https://www.poynter.org/reporting-editing/2025/white-house-press-pool-new-media/ Edit to correct spelling and add... Trump also stripped the White House Correspondents’ Association of its role in managing the White House Press Pool, taking control of deciding who will be a part of the small rotating group of journalists and photographers who accompany the president. Of the 14 permanent seats only 1 is on the right. Fox That would be like the tories having 13 news channels shoving their point of view on the population and only one channel Labour. To me that skews everything and what the general public get in terms of news and opinions on what a government is doing. The rotating people has been rebalanced to provide coverage from both sides. However, all those in the rotating pool are small outlets which only reach a small part of the population I like to read both sides views. 98% of people just their side. When I read it it did read like a well written hit piece. It focused only on those outlets that were new who were on the right and makes no mention of the news outlets that were new for the left. It then proceeds to trash or paint a dim view of as many of those right outlets as it can. After I read the article I took a look at that sites home page to see if they were a right, left or fair and balanced outlet. They are very very clearly left. At the end of the day I think this is just one more article trying to push the narrative of the left on this subject. ie Trump has kicked out all the proper news outlets and replaced them with crony outlets from the right. Its a story that goes down well with those who only want to see one sides view and will quite happily believe that Trump behaved like a dictator/king and put in place news reporting that only provides his views. I will repeat that I am one of a minority who wants to read both sides points of view on something. I am no raving mad MAGA nut who only wants one side of a story

It's the Overton window. Countries used to have two main fractions, Liberals and Conservatives then the left started to be a thing, so Europe and lots of the World had three main fractions, Socialists, Liberals, Conservatives but America still only had the two, centre right and right and their media follows them and laughably by European standards calls the side on the centre right, left wing. To me they are all out on the right.

In this country we've started to band around " far right" to mean anything that isn't centrist, this has the effect of coalescing support for Reform accelerating the concept you refer to.

Nice reply thanks. A couple of points... Pre arranged topics have always been a thing... Trump is "happy to answer all" is because he spews up a word salad or goes off in tangents and he not challenged and worse still the press sane-wash his statements. NPR has been defunded and is hanging on by a thread and the others fear Trump and they bend over backwards to appease him... some do it just for the clicks. The major standard bearers of the fourth estate have abondoned their principles and care only to keep the advertising revenue coming in and Trump of their backs. Press Access to the US President on 01:27 - Jun 27 by DJack | You forgot the Wall street Journal, you ignore the fact that the Washington post and LA Times now have right wing owners who are tipping the scales in their publications. You ignore that quite a few of them have only a marginal bias but have high credibility. Sinclair Broadcast group had revenues of $3.55 BILLION in 2024 and you claim no/little reach. You made a claim, that "They are very very clearly left" They are very very clearly left.... Oh really. Your response typifies my point that 98% of people only want to see one side of the coin. Including the need to trash the alternative view which ever side of the 98% a percent is on. And you couldn't resist finishing what was a good post by saying this: "At least know I know how credible your posting is" We can all find stuff that cements our views. e.g. Poynter says it supports “responsible news and fact-based information,” but its incessant party line of liberal-media cheerleading and conservative-media loathing really came through when Jones made a list of the “best and worst of news media in 2020.” To summarise that article Poynter listed 100% liberal outlets/presenters in the best category and all the one's in the worst category were conservative. However, the point I was trying to make is that the press pool permanent seats are still in place. I will put my hand up for missing the Wall St journal as right leaning but that still makes 10 left and 2 right of the 12 permanent seats. Having a conservative owner, who owns tons of different businesses does not change the news outlets overall, despite any influence they may exercise on times: Washington Post: its overall editorial stance and some of its content have been rated as "Lean Left" by media bias analysis organizations like AllSides and "Skews Left" by Ad Fontes Media. LA Times I ts overall editorial stance and some of its content have been rated as "Lean Left" by media bias analysis organizations like AllSides and "Skews Left" by Ad Fontes Media. The LA Times is liberal and left. In a UCLA media study, professors Groseclose and Milyo studied media bias. They rate the LA Times as liberal. My point here is both sides can source information that backs up the viewpoint that they want to see. My point in the original post which may not have been clear is that Trump didnt kick out any of the press as you claimed except for a spat with Associated Press. You said Trump kicked out the majority of the mainstream US press and let the very right wing "press" in their place. My post was addressing that ie the mainstream press are still there, nones been licked and replaced with any very right press Lastly the "do you not see what I see" I hear/see that all the time from people who only want to see one side of the fence. Cant you see what I see Cant you see it Why cant you see it All of those are basically saying whats wrong with you I will restate. I am an independant voter. There are some policies on the left I like and some on the right. I am not a Maga Lastly to someone elses post that American Politics is only right and center right and there is no left or anything else. You need to go and look at the biggest mayoral race in the USA. A few nights ago NY voted for a Socialist. That's beyond left... Anyway my post was just to address the line that all proper press "mainstream" had been kicked out and replaced with Trump crony press which is clearly bullshit. [Post edited 27 Jun 13:34]

You may think that the WSJ is "right-leaning", but most of their jounalists are center left, especially the younger ones. The editorial board tries to be true center but a lot of its opinions are based on what's best for big business. There's a lot of animosity toward Trump and the Trump Admin within the WSJ. Peggy Noonan is a true RINO (Republican in name only) and cannot stand Trump. Same for Karl Rove who is always bashing Trump, another RINO. Gerry Baker is a great journalist that reports both the good and bad in politicians and business leaders. Kim Strassel leans toward Trumpism but I've seen her criticize Trumpsters on occasion. BTW, The Washington Post is owned by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, who was not a Trump fan before the 2024 election, and gave a lot of money to Democrat campaigns over the years. According to ChatGPT, 88% of his political contributions since 1990 have gone to Democrats. He and Meta's, Mark Zuckerberg, and Apple's Tim Cook, and a lot of the Tech Sector business leaders tried to cozy up to Trump this past late winter, early spring. All have pledged vast sums of investment money for AI research and new plants for manufacturing and AI computer warehouses that Trump is looking for, which will lead to a lot of high-income jobs here in the US.

I will start of by reminding you of this "Though not as bad as I first thought back in March" To add to that I couldnt find a list of the permanent seats I only got that from yourself, so thanks for that. You didn't quote me accurately... I actually posted "At least know I know how credible your posting is " It's tongue in cheek. Yes, you did correct my erroneous post but I covered that in the first paragraph of this reply. I also pointed out the Post and the Times and it is known (in America - I've only seen things posted in reference) that their owners are driving their editorial boards in a different direction - in time this will be reflected in the bias charts, so the currentratings dont tell the full story. That said the most important rating is credibility. I also covered the fact that the press sane-wash Trumps, sometimes outrageous, comments/claims. Trumps attacks the press, labelling them "fake news", "lamestream media" etc in an effort to debase and intimidate them - I think it's working. I also posted this "The major standard bearers of the fourth estate have abondoned their principles and care only to keep the advertising revenue coming in and Trump of their backs."They should be baying for blood, Congress is abdicating it's role and Trump is wiping his butt with the Constitution, whilst the conservative members of SCOTUS have given him the power of an Emporer. I did not claim you were Maga....... Libertarian nor Ghengis Khan, but thanks for that! I believe one of the issues with left/right, far left/far right, when it comes to Europe and America, is that our definitions differ depending on which side of the pond we reside. On this side the marority of your Democratic part would viewed as conservative, much like the David Camerons government (with a little bit of merger with the right of the Labour Party)... Bernie and AOC aside. You mentioned the NY (Demoratic Party Primary) Mayoral race where the winner was someone who identify's as a Socialist - I dont know I have no idea of his policies. What you did not mention was the amount of money put in against him and the fact that, so far that I am aware of, the democratic party grandees have not come out in support of him. Additionally, I've read that the money is going to come out to defeat him in the actual race...but that's the politics of big business as much as it is the politics of the people. You stated "~Socialist. That's beyond left..." Some over here might also claim that but socialism is on the left. If you had said Marxism or Stalinism I'd say far-left but socialism, no. I'll leave it there or we will be going on until the heat-death of the universe.

The animosity to Trump is because he's not a republican, he's a populist. It's hilarious that the former members and strategists of the Republican Party are now called RINO, only because they are challenging Emporer Trump and/or the freedom caucus. Whatever happened in the past (even accepting ChatGPT... oh, my!) is of little or no bearing on the lay of the land today. Yes, bezos is toadying to Trump so he can make billions from Blue Origin and he's toadying up by donating money to trump and not challenging him in the press. That's the problem. All norms and conventions have gone out of the window and the world cowers. My honest view is that the country, once, the standard bearer of the free world is in danger of slipping into either Autarchy or Oligarchy. I sincerely hope not for all of our sakes.

Press Access to the US President on 18:29 - Jun 26 by trampie | It's the Overton window. |
The Overton window has definitely contracted. The left has been around a while mind although it may not have been generally recognised as such until 1789 (well during the period of the French revolution) when the national assembly was meeting and supporters of the Monarchy entered and went straight to the right hand side, revolutionary supporters taking the left. I'd thought that Trump had basically kicked out any press who didn't agree with him and/or asked too many awkward questions? If being a revolutionary is left wing then the USA's founding fathers, were they left wing? Was Lafayette?
