My family are Irish I have direct descendants who are from what my Grandfather called ‘the south’ He fought for two years in Spain in the civil war and before that he was in the British army, there are still people from the south who join the British army today. Multiple thousands even since 1922.
He was a proper socialist who was captured in Cordoba when the govt forces were so depleted they were throwing rocks at German supplied aircraft. He escaped eventually with several others and walked to the coast and they worked their way round until they sought refuge in France. Getting back to the UK after 6 months or so he was ‘pressed’ into service by the British army at Southampton. He refused and he told me on numerous occasions ‘I told them I had been fighting fascists for the past two years, they could do this one without me’ He was jailed for seven months in Northampton. After that someone with a brain thought, hang on, he might be useful. They released him to train recruits and add some experience into their training regards guerilla warfare. This he was happy to do.
Again doing his bit to fight fascism.
