Now if there isn’t a bloody obvious solution to the club’s lack of leaders staring the club’s management full on right in the face here, then I’m a Dutchman……

We've made plenty of mistakes as a club but letting this man go was HUGE!

Im a big fan of Oriol Romeu, but people have short memories, as we struggled in 2017/18 & 2018/19 people were saying that he wasn't fit to lace the boots of Steven Davis etc etc.

In 2018/19 he was competing against Pierre Emille Hojbjerg and by 2019/20 he was not a regular starter and often on the bench, sometimes not getting off it.

When Hojbjerg left he had a bit of a swan song in 2021/22 and I was disappointed when he left in the summer of 2022, but his replacement was Oriol Romeu, no one can say that wasn't an upgrade.

He will turn 34 in September and as a player that relied on fitness, that is not good.

He was a regular started in his first season at Girona in 22/23, but in 23/24 his move to Barcelona meant his game time got shorter and he was mainly on the bench.

Last season back at Girona on loan he started the season in the starting line up but in the second half of the season was usually either a sub or if in the starting line up, rarely got much past the hour mark.

Was he really a leader at Saints ? I would say not but he was a brilliant foot soldier, but I think he could do a job here this season

We replaced him with Romeo Lavia, he would not have got in the first team much if he had stayed

I understand that fans have affection for players from the past but our fans seem obsessive about them.
Every time one of our old players is available there's a clamour to get them back. Do we just suspend our understanding of the passage of time?
Fans were calling for Fonte, Walcott, Lallana and even Danny Ings to return - and the ones that did weren't a success.
We need to understand that they aren't the same player that left us. Nick's right, Romeu wasn't a regular by the time he left and often games passed him by.
There's an entire world of players to choose from. I'm sure there is a younger, more dynamic midfielder out there than Romeu. Move on.

I seem to recall Ruben Selles, of whom you seem to have a fairly high opinion, was often leaving Lavia out of the side in his time as manager.....

Ordinarily I would agree.

Particularly with the players you have listed.

I however think Romeu is different to those players.

He would transform our midfield in this division, and provide the presence in the team which Still seems to have identified us as lacking.

Would anybody seriously rather have Smallbone or Aribo in midfield than Romeu???

No I wouldn't. But I want the Romeu from 5 years ago, not at 34.
The championship is hectic and relentless, I just think we are going to need legs at cdm.

Not sure where you got that from, checking the stats, Ruben Selles was in charge for 16 games, he started Lavia in 15 of them, playing him either for the whole game or all but the final couple of minutes in 14 of those games and only in the final game of the season did he take him off before the 86th minute.

Selles did not select Lavia in only one match, the home defeat to Brentford when he brought him off the bench around the hour mark.

People will start calling you Trump from Poole all this false stories without evidence.

For the record I did not have that high opinion of Selles, I thought that he was a promising manager learning his trade who was thrown in at the deep end with no experienced backing on the coaching staff to help him out, I don't think his career has recovered since

My memory may be distorted by the lunacy of Selles taking him off at Arsenal away when we were 3-1 up (possibly for Diallo, can't remember, was too busy trying to watch the game while others were doing the Poznan.....) with about 5 minutes left.....

Well, Selles seems to be doing alright for himself, somehow getting the Sheffield United gig.

Nick whilst we’re discussing the virtues of returning players, I’m surprised that you haven’t taken the opportunity to promote the return of Maya Yoshida, I seem to recall you were a big fan of his and he could certainly captain the team and lead the youngsters.
