Car accident 09:04 - Jul 25 with 503 viewsAguycalledJack

Wife was shopping in aldi carmarthen and somebody pulling into the car park space next to her hit our car.

Nobody injured just damage. Only had the car a month so brand new.

Took it to the dealership for an estimate of repairs and they told my wife that they would deal with everything, would deal with the other other drivers insurers etc and that there was no need for my wife to inform her insurers.

This doesn’t sit well with me as I thought if you didn’t report the bump it would affect the insurance cover my wife has. Equally we don’t want to inform our insurer if we don’t have to as ultimately it will push the premium up next year.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

I would inform her insurers , she'll be asked anyway when its y time for renewal if she'd had an accident in the previous year whether or not it was her fault and if she does claim without telling them then like most insurers her claim will be deemed invalid.

I think the dealership are just trying to get the paint shop work, its slack at this time of the year as there are not as many accidents as the winter. Personally I would inform my insurance company as there is a database of all insurance work and it will be recorded. When you come to renew you will be asked if you have been in any accidents fault or non fault, failing to declare could invalidate your insurance. You will probably get a loading even if it is not your fault. Only way around it is if the other driver offers to pay the dealership direct avoiding the insurance. All my opinion obviously.

Ultimately drivers responsibility to inform insurance company
You're right to be suspicious
They could deny everything

The above posts offer sound advice. Your wife’s insurance company are going to find out about the incident if another insurance company is involved as they exchange information to prevent fraud etc, it’s better they hear about it from you than anyone else. A dealer paint job may be a lot more expensive than a car repair shop, so that could cause issues further down the line with regards to quibbling re price etc if the other party’s insurance company won’t pay dealer prices. What happens if the other party changes their mind and denies liability leaving, it could leave you with a bill.

If your wife doesn’t disclose the incident, she may find her insurance becomes invalid which could cause huge issues for you if she’s involved in another collision and the insurance company will only settle 3rd party liability. You could lose the value of your car in a worst case scenario.

Thanks all.

The above posts mirror my thoughts.

I'm about to start another thread about another car accident but would welcome thoughts on that also.

Yep, inform them. I had similar once, I rang the insurance company to let them know there had been a prang and that I was not putting in a claim...did not affect my renewal.
