Good news story 19:19 - Aug 1 with 2385 views | Gwyn737 | Number of asylum seekers in hotels has dropped from the 54000 peak in 2023 to around 32000. Not a lot of good news stories around at the moment so nice to have a positive.

Good news story on 15:14 - Aug 4 by Martyn | You need Trump 2.0. It's coming. Border closed for illegals and law passed over here. If your legal you get benefits. If your not tough shit. |
Illegal immigrants don’t get benefits here either. Unfortunately it gets confused by those waiting for processing who are given accommodation with many associate with benefits.

It's happening now on a regular basis, and a poor show for not revealing the nationality of them from the beginning

It's been going on for years 🙊🙉🙈. They are being protected by the police and the courts. And welcomed by loonies. It does make me wonder why some people think it's okay.🤔

Well anyone who asks questions is far right, it's unbelievable. Are West Yorkshire Police still investigating the grooming gangs now their officers have been implicated? [Post edited 4 Aug 20:01]

Good news story on 01:10 - Aug 5 with 402 views | Robbie | Well done to the LLanelli folk who fought against The Stradey Park Hotel becoming a dumping ground for illegal immigrants , media will of course call them fleeing refugees . Penally Camp near Temby was not up to desired standard wanted by the refugees so they moved onto better accomodation , all paid for by us tax payers of course . Big talker Starmer , I will smash the small boats scandal as soon as I am Office pledge . Good luck there mush .

Good news story on 11:45 - Aug 3 by Gwyn737 | If that’s the case across the board (if imagine at least some have been processed and eligible for for work), it’s still getting the overall bill down. As I said, a good news story. |
I'd want to see how much LAs are spending before agreeing this is good news overall. It looks as though large numbers of migrants who arrived after the date the Tories said would make them ineligible for asylum processing have now been waved through with only cursory processing, and to me that is terrible news as we have little idea of who we have granted refugee status. The Government tends to put the best spin it can on various figures by manipulating the categories under headline descriptions, as for example citing high returns figures that include large numbers of voluntary returns and relatively few deportations. Re the benefits angle, there are at least 4 categories of migrants who entered illegally. Undocumented migrants who have failed to register an asylum claim and remain in the UK illegally - no benefits. Asylum seekers receive basic accommodation, food and a cash card allowance - which I would class as a benefit, although this is not in the same budget as UC etc. They get NHS access and free prescriptions. Some LAs provide additional perks such as free or discounted use of leisure facilities. https://www.gov.uk/asylum-support/what-youll-get Persons whose asylum claims have been rejected but who remain because of various obstacles to deportation (big group) - complicated, but most get something. If they enter an appeal this is normally at the same level as for an asylum seekers, otherwise there is so-called Section 4 support. https://england.shelter.org.uk/professional_resources/legal/housing_options/asyl Persons granted asylum (refugees) - Eligible for UC plus Child Benefit (backdated to date of asylum claim). https://righttoremain.org.uk/toolkit/what-happens-when-you-get-refugee-status/#s Additional to migrants who entered the UK illegally, there are various categories of migrants covered by specific social protection schemes, who also receive public support. Taking the above together, a lot of public money is being spent.

I agree with you there's semantics at play here. But the idea that they arrive, have access to benefits as we know them and are put in 5 star accomodattion is a bit far. The media keep taking about the Britannia hotel being in Canary Wharf - that's very deliberate due to the link with wealth. Antone who has stayed in a Britannina hotel knows they're pretty basic.

Not strictly true. It’s the default setting that they can’t clam benefits on a temporary visa but they can apply for a right to public funds if they are destitute or if there are children involved. There is no public record around how many claim or how many receive it for whatever reason it’s not recorded. But you can bet nearly all of them are applying for this.

Can’t? Or won’t? Napoleon was stopped, the luftwaffe, the Kriegsmarine, the Spanish Armada. All tried to cross the channel but ultimately failed. This island has withstood all the grand armies and navies of Europe for countless centuries but suddenly we “can’t” stop a load of overloaded inflatable dinghies. If the political will was there it could be stopped overnight.

Can't. At the moment. We'd need political will on several sides, or we'd have to resort to physical means the latter could see huge international implications, potentially at a criminal level.

What would be criminal about picking them up in the channel, saying “whoa lads this is very dangerous. We’re going to take you back to France for your own safety.” then safely dropping them off at border control in Calais into the very safe and capable hands of the French authorities that we are paying billions to in exchange for them to deal with this issue? I can absolutely guarantee that if we did that every day for just a few days the boats would stop almost immediately.

France aren't obliged to take them, we pay them to stop them leaving. Once they leave they aren't their problem. So we can't do that unless France agree to take them, they obviously won't.

If our government agencies have no right to enter French territorial waters without permission how on earth are we going to return them to France?
