The first half was a total non event. We played much better in the second half and had a enough chances to win. Dieseruvwe is a real handful and linked play well. Their number 3 foulded him consistently. Pritchard looks tidy at wing back and Amantchi is an absolute unit. I am not sure how his late strike stayed out. We certainly have more options and much more physicality up top.

Whatmuff did not really have anything to do but looked steady. The only real blemish was their goal which was the result of a bad pass into midfield.

The telling thing against Southend was that Allarakhia was against a pacey opponent, was tired and needed replacing. Jim did not fancy Buyabu and brought on Hogan. The issue was that this meant that Beckwith moved out to left wing back and Hogan was playing left side of the three. Both arguably out of position. Southend scored not long after. Bird then came off and Mitchell came on and then we had no out ball when we were facing increasing amounts of pressure.

On paper there is not a big drop off between starting players and subs and in many cases there will be horses for courses selections and we will have direct replacements that hopefully Jim can trust.

One thing I'd add about the Southend substitution/switch was as an exile tuning in on DAZN it was really interesting/ worrying to seeing Beckwith's reaction to the change. Hogan was practically having to point and position him to exactly where he was supposed to be playing as LWB- which seemed an indicator to me that it hadn't really been covered much in training. I'd be very surprised if we ever see Beckwith playing that role again.

Loads of intelligent knowledgeable analysis on here the last couple of days. When I read a thread like this it always solidifies why I continue to love this club from afar, we've a fanbase to be proud of.

Another good piece on the BBC site the other day in line with the LFC one 442 posted - a new Pep in town at Man City and a likely continued evolution towards a slightly different approach which will no doubt keep trickling down the pyramid :

I suspect we'll spend the majority of the next 9 months revisiting much of the content of this thread as the matches tick by. Glass always half full though in August the week before we get underway!

I suspect that you are correct and that the issues raised in this thread will persist throughout the season, subject to results and performances.

Personally I think that BJ has recruited well this summer and credit to him but the proof of the pudding will be how the new squad gels tactically in producing good attacking football. We appear to have good cover in most positions.
- The GK position may be a masterstroke with two potential stars of the future already capped at under age level.
-The midfield combination is intriguing and it remains to be seen where Petit and Mancini will feature.
- Would like to see a young CH (regret Ferguson going) and hope to bring in a pacy winger on loan in due course.

This leaves small matters such as our formation, style of play and tactics as well as substitutions etc. There is no doubt that this needs to improve against the better teams but our coaching staff has also improved. However I am very optimistic at this point and have a sneaking feeling that Mani may be the divisions top scorer.

Most professional pundits (bookies) think that we will finish 4th. However I am not convinced that Carlisle will be runaway champions or that York will have such a good season again. There will also be a dark horse such as Southend or Scunthorpe in the mix?

The Ogden family has backed the management well and it is time for them to step up to the mark with improved performances starting with a convincing win against Boreham Wood who are one of the favourites for relegation.

Hope we have a great season!

Why Scunthorpe? Their summer recruitment seems to have been concentrated well below this level.

If anything, I think it's more likely that an established NL club, like Woking for example, could have an improved season.

Having said that, I'm hopeless at predictions.

That was the worst thing about that substitution - the players were as obviously baffled as fans.

That post about City continuing their own move away from how Guardiola used to play also supports the argument that the game as a whole is moving on. With Liverpool winning the league by changing the way they built attacks, the two are nearer to meeting in the middle than ever.

It’s clear that we’ve tried to do the same over the course of last season, sometimes with frustrating results as we’ve not been as effective as we could be. The signings this summer though have given rise to expectations that we now have the resources to ensure that flexibility in our approach.
