Trying to stay as positive as possible after watching the game today but blimey, that was a tough watch. Obviously I don't want to judge the manager on the pre-season games, but I can only assume the approach has been a considerable effort to identify the players we don't need rather than the ones we want. Saw very little today to make me think that Julien is any type of a tactician... we did very little to trouble them today and I have to say that I'm pretty concerned - we seem to be lacking in three, four maybe five positions. As he has alluded to in the interview, next week will be a totally different game with a different atmosphere, but I do worry for him with a full house if we offer as little as we did today...
For me the biggest thing is not only do we not seem to have much (yet) in the final thirds but we seem to be struggling to be struggling positionally at the back. I said a few weeks ago that I thought Bould has his work cut out at the back and if we are going to get some points on the board early on our defence has to be really solid. Not seeing that yet.

We're not playing Brentford next week. Of course, a striker on the pitch would help but we'll get on the ball more and create far more chances against Preston. I see signs that the players are being asked to take more risks than maybe they did under Marti. There were a few little passages today where we popped it around quite nicely and played riskier forward passes when we could have just gone back. It wasn't quite good enough against Brentford but I can see it working against lesser opposition and leading to some good chances. Let's see what happens next week.
I think the reality is if you dont have a striker on the pitch that will either stretch the defence or provide an out ball by winning in the air (like their CF today) then it gives no space or options for the midfield to play through or space to operate. (As we saw with the first 15 games with clear up front last season)

We weren’t playing Old Brentford yesterday either. They are where now is where CN and JS are aspiring us to be in 3-5 years not weeks. They are in every way in a different league to us so the first half I saw was no more or no less of what I expected.
A 2nd week of training with Burrell will hopefully see him on the bench again and then get mins against Preston in an attacking threat we have been crying out for.

I'm not convinced he yet knows the best combination. Fully fit, the full backs are Dunne & Larkeche. But at CB he has Cook, Mbengue, Morrison, Akindeleni and JCS. The last 2 are left footed which is an advantage. Never helped by JCS hardly ever fit.
And that's before Tylon Smith gets any consideration.
