Rare positivity 15:50 - Aug 14 with 646 views | franniesTache | Last time we came down after the league cup game against Gillingham I said we'd end up in the play offs, i was proven right. That was based on the fact that we didn't seem to know how to win dirty and looked like a side with no cutting edge or idea how to force a result. This time round at the same stage i think we'll be top two and possibly win the league. That's based on the fact that we're playing badly but finding a way to win. Still seems to be pragmatic and understands the result is more important than the style. I'm also sure we'll come good soon and start looking far more dangerous. Ipswich is our first big test and they seem out of form at the moment, i think we have a great chance of getting something there and i'm a lot more confident than I was the last time we played them in the Championship. Which is all weirdly positive for me so obviously we'll lose 3-0 now

I still think Birmingham are the team to beat, as they have the momentum and a lot of confidence about them, plus a pretty hostile crowd. However the League is literally anybody's to win, and some good signings over the next two weeks can make all the difference to a team. We clearly need a few signings, and my concern with Saints is that Sports Republic do not have a good record on signing players who improve the team. You have to recruit well. For a change, I think we have recruited a decent manager, Spors just needs to give him the tools.

Too many managers over-complicate the game and are too rigid with their "playbook", so it was good to have someone go fvck this, it's not working, let's try this. I was pretty positive about the season anyway (what's the point otherwise ffs) and agree we'll be right up there. Key game in lots of ways on Sunday.

I actually think it's a pretty weak league this time round which helps us, i watch some of Ipswich/Brum and both sides looked poor, and whilst we didn't start brilliantly we look like we have another few gears to go. as for signings Downs looks like what he needs is a goal to start him off and then he'll fly. He's already been in good positions and missed a couple of sitters, which suggests to me when he finds his feet he'll score a fair few. The big question i have is creativity, if we lose Dibling (which we will) and lose Fernandes (which might happen) we don't really have anyone who can open up the sides parking the bus.

The manager is very clear that winning is all that matters. I agree totally and love this refreshing attitude. I also don't care how we win, just win the game. The manager is also transparent and honest about Dibling which I like. There are a few questions marks though. Will we keep Fernandes and Dibling. If they go, will we replace them sufficiently? Will we leave it to the last day, and make panic buys? Will the manager be given the proper tools to do the job? We need to be creating more and scoring more, even with those two staying. Will we still add to the squad even if they stay? Still a few questions marks for me yet. Ipswich will be telling, definitely. [Post edited 14 Aug 16:19]

"we don't really have anyone who can open up the sides parking the bus." The way to beat a team that parks the bus is the same as it's always been - get the ball wide, where the space is and get lots of crosses into the box. That's how we won the game on Saturday too. We SHOULD be better at beating packed defences than in the RM era because doing it the RM way you really do need some special skill to pass your way through a packed defence. Now with WS, who believes in crosses, we should be better equipped to handle this. But that assumes you have players who can win headers and get on the end of things, or at least be a physical presence that upsets defenders and causes chaos. That's the problem as I see it, we're really missing a centre forward. We have to hope that Stewart or Downs steps up to the job because if they don't that will nullify one of WS's main tactics.

We’re also missing some wide players who can cross the ball. Which is where Tom Fellows from West Brom would potentially come in very handy…..

That was only because he got the starting line-up completely wrong. At one point in the first half we were knocking high balls into the box for Armstrong and Fraser.
