I lobed old Stampy, he wasn't your everyday actor, he did some good stuff and some dross but I saw him interviewed a few times and he was a great laugh, he liked to have fun. he will be more remmebered for the rubbish that was Superman ahead of some top quality work.
He won't be alone. Judi Dench, M in Bond films, Ian McKellen will be Gandalf, there are others who have done some great stuff but will be known forever for possibly their worst work. |  | |  |

When he made " Bridge on the River Kwai" ,the producers wanted an American actor to give the film more global appeal so they approached William Holden.
Same thing. Holden asked for a percentage instead of a wage. Guinness won an Oscar and Holden got all the money. He learned a lesson.
Holden was offered "The Guns of Navarone" and he tried it again but was told to sod off.
