He won't be alone. Judi Dench, M in Bond films, Ian McKellen will be Gandalf, there are others who have done some great stuff but will be known forever for possibly their worst work.

The Grandaddy of them all. Alec Guinness. Bit harsh on McKellen though. the LOTR trilogy remains a fabulous piece of work and a cultural touchstone 25 years later.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

When Alec Guinness was offered Star Wars he said he would do it for a percentage instead of a wage. As no one expected much from the film so they agreed. He made an absolute fortune.

Ultimately he (and his estate) have earned something like $100m from Star Wars. Probably more than almost everyone else bar George Lucas himself. Good going.

When he made " Bridge on the River Kwai" ,the producers wanted an American actor to give the film more global appeal so they approached William Holden. Same thing. Holden asked for a percentage instead of a wage. Guinness won an Oscar and Holden got all the money. He learned a lesson. Holden was offered "The Guns of Navarone" and he tried it again but was told to sod off. Gregory Peck got the part.
