Familiar learnings and fresh frustrations as QPR lose at Watford – Report on 20:47 - Aug 17 by ParkRoyalR | I was in Watford side stand opposite dug-outs and on 18 yard line in line with Morgans superb strike, A few things stood out from that side view, 1) Most obvious being Morgan seemed to be at least 5 yards+ ahead of the defensive line and Watford seemed to target this 2) Why was Cook playing Left Centre Half rather than his preferred position as Right Centre Half, which is his more comfortable side & where he could have coached Morgan through the game positionally, Booing was clear to hear 100 yards diagonal to away end where I was, as was jeering when Madsen was subbed, the Manager & Nourry were a lot closer than I was, so should have got the message. |
1) On Morgan, he was my MoM for all the reasons stated in the report - which is great btw - but the 2nd goal and a lot of their chances first half were him being drawn to a high press of their LB and allowing a pass down the line to spring a runner behind. They drew him out multiple times and got past him easily. 2nd half though he fixed it and did great on multiple occasions to stop that ball whilst still pressing. 2) I wondered this too, but assumed it was because being on the side of Mbengue would mitigate/cover his lack of pace, and maybe with Morgan having more licence to get forward, means we wouldn't be as exposed to counters on one side. It did feel a little disjointed though. Lastly on Madsen. That's pretty much the final straw for me. If you can only perform well with time, space and without too much pressure, you have zero business being in a Championship midfield. He misplaced a really simple 10 yard pass in the first half and you could see him just crumble. Thought it was almost cruel to send him back out there, esp as he was going to be booed for going off, but he was a complete liability in the middle. You can rightly point to Fields limitations, but at least he's got the massive upside defensively and is several million times braver than Madsen has ever been. If we get to the end of this window and haven't signed a proper box to box / 8 style midfielder, I don't think we'll ever see us successfully play the way the manager wants.

Familiar learnings and fresh frustrations as QPR lose at Watford – Report on 16:26 - Aug 18 by PhilmyRs | It's a fair challenge. I guess I'm just coming at it from a "wiping the slate clean" position, giving the guy some leeway for adapting to a new country, environment and clearly being a shy, nervous character and so his time starts this season for me. That's also taking into account this is a new Manager, with fresh ideas and a different way of playing. All those things considered, a decent 45 mins and one poor 45 mins isn't worthy of giving up on him in my opinion. I do agree there will come a time when we may have to cut our losses, but I just think it's far too early for that. . |
Bugger. Downvoted in error . Apologies . I thought it was a great interview and little bit of good PR by the club to do that interview with Madsen in pre season. He came across as a genuine and good guy who clearly struggled with nerves or pressure and confidence. Made me warm to him immediately and as I say , I really want him to do well . I don’t think he is lazy , it’s just not his game to tear around smashing in to people . But there is no excuse for hiding . And unfortunately we saw it again on Saturday where he can easily step away from an opponent to be available and it’s like he’s tethered , he doesn’t have the confidence. After the game v Preston I walked to my car an hour or so after the game had finished. I was walking close behind Madsen , Adamson and a member of staff going to a car . Adamson was buzzing that he’d made his debut . Madsen was shuffling , shaking his head , complaining (couldn’t quite make out what he was saying ) and his body language was like someone had died. I think he was going over Preston’s goal . Can’t be 100% sure. But I felt like grabbing him and shaking him and saying “come on man! It’s ok . Put it behind you and let’s go again next week “ But I fear he can’t . On a human level that’s really sad for him. But it’s not a charity (although it feels like it at a times). He needs to snap himself out of it because I still think he can give something to this team . But the fans turning on him already will just kill him off . That’s a shame .

I blame the club for bringing him here, a player that cannot play Championship football. Fans aren't 'turning on him already' he has been here for over a year. I did post before the season started that I feared fans might turn on Julien Stéphan quickly simply because he is not Marti. We have to keep our best pragmatic hats on and give him a proper chance.

Yes, hopefully Stephan is a quick learner, I want Madsen to be the creative passing midfielder we've lacked for so long but his lack of movement is so disappointing, If Neville & Carragher had their magic pen on him on Monday Night Football, every other minute they would be highlighting space 5 yards from him that he should be moving into to lose his man and be an option to take the pass, The role needs a confident person who demands the ball and I'm just not seeing that, And agree the criticism of Field is mental, we all want him to finish that chance when he's attacking the box late on but £1 to £2m does'nt buy you Declan Rice unfortunately, Field is one of our best if not the best buys in the last 5 years and a key reason we've managed to circle the drain in recent years rather than plunge down it into League 1.
