... "The digger was positioned in front of a partially collapsed boundary wall at the rear of the beach. It lifted the stones into gabion baskets which were also in front of the wall. The wall separates the garden of Caswell resident and entrepreneur Chris Kiley from the Blue Flag beach in Gower."

I have seen what he was doing but I was not there at the time the police arrived. He bought the wire cases empty instead of buying them with stones inside then proceeded to remove stones from the beach to fill the baskets. One could question as to whether this is legal, are we all allowed to take a digger on a public beach and remove whatever we want?

Posters may say that Mr Kiley should have brought in wire cages already filled with aggregate, but presumably that too would have needed planning permission as he was adding material to the beach, and there would have been questions about the nature of those materials and whether adding them would cause any issues. This seems a grey area to me as Chris Kiley may not have been removing any stones from the beach, but merely encasing them to prevent degradation of the bank of pebbles. I suppose there might be debate about where the beach ends and his land begins and any movement of materials across that boundary. Best to communicate with the LA in advance, but I wonder how quickly bureaucracy would have moved.

It is his wall on his land that he was replacing, he was not adding materials to the beach. Come down and have a look.

The gabions come empty and are filled on sure with graded rock to suit the grid. If it is filled with ungraded material you can buy facia stones usually immitation rock.

If he does not have a facia and a suitable grading the gabions will degenerate and the stone fall out under load and weather.

I bought my gabions full nearly 20 years ago galvanised with currently no signs of any wear whatsoever.
