Lovely Ted.
I love when someone else does this.

I'll go looking for a tune.

"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."

I'm going with an obvious one.
A protest song that's also an anti-protest song.
A love song in a time of utter hatred.
Brave as hell, and beautiful as heaven.

They say the skies of Lebanon are burning,
Those mighty cedars bleeding in the heat.
They're showing pictures on the television,
Women and children dying in the streets.

And we're still at it in our own place,
Still trying to reach the future through the past.
Still trying to carve tomorrow from a tombstone...

But hey don't listen to me,
This wasn't meant to be no sad song,
We've heard too much of that before.
Right now I only want to be here with you,
Till the morning dew comes falling.

I want to take you to the Island,
And trace your footprints in the sand,
And in the evening when the sun goes down,
We'll make love to the sound of the ocean.

They're raising banners over by the markets,
White-washing slogans on the shipyard walls.
Witch-doctors praying for a mighty showdown,
No way our holy flag is gonna fall.

Up here we sacrifice our children
To feed the worn-out dreams of yesterday
And teach them dying will lead us into glory....
But hey don't listen to me...

Cos this wasn't meant to be no sad song.
I've sung too much of that before.
Right now I only want to be here with you
Till the morning dew comes falling...

I want to take you to the Island,
And trace your footprints in the sand.
And in the evening when there's no-one around,
We'll make love to the sound of the ocean.

Now I know us plain folks don't see all the story,
And I know this peace and love's just copping out,
I guess these young boys dying in the ditches
Is just what being free is all about.

And how this twisted wreckage down on Main Street
Will bring us all together in the end,
And we'll go marching down the road to freedom....

Freedom...

Would love to see that, Ted,.

I used to go and see him in the Mean Fiddler a lot. A rare talent. A superb traditional Irish string-player and a great balladeer, a great collector of music, back when none of those things were fashionable - then he went pop/rock and wrote some great tunes for other artists - Tina Turner, if I remember rightly, was one of them.

Then went back to folk again.

Those nights in the Fiddler...Jesus, I'd pay double to get in again.

Great thread, Ted. I could spend all night doing this, but I'll finish with this one.

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

I was In the army when this was released, most of the lads hated It and him and the song, not me though.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

One more from Brady.
Two lads meet a recruiting Sergeant, somewhere in Ireland, Scotland or England, two or three centuries ago.
Things escalate slowly, for a while..

I could have picked half a dozen Nina Simone tracks to be honest.
