Swansea.com Stadium to host John Cornforth benefit match ... 13:50 - Aug 29 with 1264 viewstheloneranger

"Swansea City is delighted to confirm that the Swansea.com Stadium is to play host to a benefit match for the club’s former captain John Cornforth.

Popular Whitley Bay-born midfielder Cornforth skippered the Swans to our 1994 Autoglass Trophy success in 1994, becoming the first player to lead a Swansea team at Wembley.

He made just shy of 150 league appearances for the Swans between 1991 and 1996 – and won a pair of Wales caps.

Following his departure from the club, Cornforth was granted a benefit year by the Swansea City committee of the time but, due to a number of factors, this had never actually come to fruition.

However, when John reconnected with the club through the Former Players’ Association as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of that Autoglass Trophy success, he mentioned the letter he still had from the club regarding a benefit match.

Subsequently, chief executive Tom Gorringe invited John to be his guest in the directors’ box for last season’s game at Sunderland where it was agreed that Swansea City would honour its promise.

John and a number of his Autoglass Trophy squad will pull on their boots once again for a fixture against a celebrity all-star XI – featuring the likes of Rob Brydon and Lee Trundle.

Full details of the fixture, including the date, the names of further participants and ticketing details will be confirmed in due course."

He was a very decent chap and very friendly.
Still not entirely sure any benefit should be awarded though for any player. Maybe there’s some special circumstances. Hope it goes well for him.

Credit where it’s due. I see the Swans are looking for a new ticket and retail assistant. Clearly focussing in on recent issues regards hands on deck.

I see that he didn’t have a successful career after the Swans, plus pay those days was bad compared to today. Had he been from the last fifteen years would have been dead against it.

Got to give him a nod for his playing efforts onfield for The Swans , well done .
Will support him for this benefit game when arranged .

Up there with Vinnie Jones getting a Welsh Football cap , just how did that happen.

Old joke was they visited Wales and were entitled to play for our Country .

The great Jack Charlton never came across as an Eire football Manager either though .
