Are we going to buy a striker? 13:12 - Sep 1 with 1285 viewsDorsetIan

How long have we been waiting now for Saints to buy a decent striker?

Are we really going to finish another transfer window with the same flawed strikers leading the line?

The club needs at least 2 players to cover each position, so that's why they have brought in those players in this transfer window.
The two positions that we have multiple cover are at ctr back & striker.
We have 4 genuine ctr backs & a couple of others that can cover that position.
Up front we had 5 so called strikers ( albeit Diaz has just gone so we're down to 4).
Problem we have at both ctr back & striker we have quantity & no quality.

No, the problem at "striker" is that none of them are centre forwards. We have plenty of "strikers" to play wide in a 3, or second striker in a 2, but no real centre forwards.

Not sure about that.
I think both Stewart & Downs are regarded as ctr forwards. Albeit not very good ones.

I'd have thought that the priority in a transfer window would be to strengthen in key positions where we're not very good, like centre forward and goalkeeper, especially as they're such important positions.

Instead the policy seems to be to say we've got strikers and goalkeepers who are not very good so let's go out and buy a load of midfielders.

Stewart & Downs CFs?

Stewart - I thought he might be our CF this season, but WS obviously doesn't think so. He hasn't been picked and in his latest appearance was brought on as a wide player, not CF. So, unless he has a change of heart, WS isn't going to play him at CF. So, I don't think he should be classed as a CF if he's not going to play there.

Downs - doesn't look like a CF to me. He looks like the type of player that needs a bit of time and space, so he'd be more suited to playing wide, or second striker. A CF has to fight against the opposition CBs to get a yard of space, because the CBs will be all over him. I can't see Downs wrestling with championship CBs or being much of a physical presence. Apparently he's said himself that he's not strong at heading either, so that's another issue with him being a CF.

So, to me they are both CFs in theory, not reality.

How to win games.
Score in the opponents goal and stop your opponents scoring in yours.
A Centre Forward and a Goalkeeper is imperative in achieving above.
How many Midfielders and Wide men do we have now?
