There has been a lot of talk about our strikers inability to score. I grew up watching Saints in the 80’s and when it came to the opposition Ian Rush had to be the biggest conman of them all.
We’re talking about someone who is regarded as one of Liverpools finest. At the time he had Dalglish, McDermott etc… pumping balls in to him.
Now my point is, a striker is only as good as the playmaker around him.
Take that away then a striker is crap.
After the transfer window and the acquisitions we’ve got then maybe its the service they get rather they are prolific on their own

Agreed. Before we decide strikers are no good we have to examine if they are getting service. If they miss their chances then they probably aren't up to it. If they aren't getting any chances then maybe there's a different problem.

I think all our strikers should get a clean slate from now on. We have more attack minded midfielders and wingers now so let's see what happens.

I would prefer it if for once the defence kept a clean sheet.

I really don’t think our defence and keeping a clean sheet is a problem. It’s the creativity and finishing off chances is our concern right now

I agree. One thing Saints have been doing this season is creating chances. The problem has been that our strikers aren't finishing them, even when they're a yard in front of an open goal.

We’ll see how things will change now.
Let’s take this up again after 10 games.
Then we’ll see who is right…

I think Rush might have got a few for Wales too…in the days before the likes of Giggs and Bale were around to set him up. If it hadn’t been for him Saints would have more than just the one major trophy in the cabinet. He should be criticised for that moustache though.

You cannot reason a person out of something they were not reasoned into.

Have you really… what was all you’ve seen ?
I’m talking about a player who scored lots of goals from about 2 yards. Good for him but out of his comfort zone and he was a small step up from being useless
The Danish team had a player years ago Preben Elkjær . He was the same, played in Italy and ended up being one of Denmarks all time goal scorers . In his time playing he had the Laudrup brothers pumping balls into him. It used to be a joke that most of his goals were tap ins. Records say though he was one of DKs all time goal scorers.
Again .. a striker is only as good as the service he gets. Hence is a good football player someone who scores tap ins or someone who creates chances ? Ideally both but they don’t play in the championship.

Isn’t this supposed to be a forum ? You know come with a comment then back it up.
We’re all Saints fans talking about football, it’s not hard to come with reasonable comments up for discussion.
Isn’t that the whole point ?

But you still have to have really good movement as a striker to be in a position to score the tap-ins.

Yes, you need creative players around you, but I think there's a lot more to it than that.

If you look at someone like Sekou Mara, his movement in the box was absolutely non-existent when a wide player had the ball. He was lazy beyond belief. I regularly would see KWP point to where he wanted Mara to run to, and he just got ignored.

Whereas the top strikers are always looking to pull themselves away from their marker.

Good point Pat Though I think Mara is a bad example.
I guess you get strikers who just have that ability and communication with the pliayers around them.
Isn’t that the case for most strikers who play daily with the same creators.
Of course there are exceptions when they are there at the right time constantly. That’s when you win the golden boot.
My point from this thread was , are our strikers that bad. Will they with better service now (hopefully) come good

Ian Rush was one of the best strikers to have played in England.
His goal record and honours list speak for itself.

Fair enough , I respect your opinion.
That’s the good thing with a forum . We might not agree but at the end of the day we’re all Saints fans. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Mara was that bad.

He had more movement in his bowels than his legs.

I watched a few Liverpool games at the Dell, I don't think I ever saw Rush score, in fact I don't think I saw Liverpool score!
Was I lucky? I know Liverpool did win 3-2 (when Saints scored that 16 pass goal) but our defence kept them fairly quiet in their pomp.

Hopefully something will click up front soon but I worry about our defence, it feels like this problem hasn't been addressed for a while now.

First time poster here too! 😁

Top 3 biscuits, easy yet controversial...the first 3 Jaffa cakes outta the packet.

2nd biscuit question in a week, someone asked me "if you were a biscuit, which biscuits and why?"

Ih his first season at Liverpool Ian Rush played 7 First division games and didn't get a goal, so that perhaps highlights that you have to give a striker a bit of time to come good.

I just had a look at the Saints V Liverpool games in the time Rush played for them in Rush's time at Liverpool roughly 1980- 1996 bar a season spent at Juventus, Liverpool failed to score at the dell just twice in the league and once in the League cup out of 16 League games and one in the League cup.

1983/84 2-0 to Saints

1986/87 League cup semi 1st leg 0-0

1990/91 1-0 to Saints

In that time Liverpool scored 26 goals in the League at the Dell and we scored 29 goals, so they didn't have it all their own way

Thank you

I could've sworn that after the 83-84 2-0 win the next time I watched Saints v L'pool it was 1-0 but it was 2-1 according to the stats.

The one after that was the 0-0 league cup semi 1st leg, my memory of that was Paul Walsh spitting at Kevin Bond (please don't tell me that's wrong 😄) and getting Ian Rush's autograph as he was off to Juve at the end of the season.

Steve Moran was a great striker for Saints but I guess in the same way as Rush he had Keegan, Armstrong, Dennis, Mick Mills, Danny Wallace, Ball, Williams, Channon, Golac and Frank Worthington playing alongside him (not all at the same time!)...how could he miss!
