2 goals in his first two Turkish League games for Trabzonspor will get a few people saying we should never have let him go.

But in truth that was his goalscoring record in his first spell in the country, the standar is a lot less than even the Championship with all but a handful of clubs

There is a reason he was preferred to AA, Archer etc. last year. It's because he was better than them.

Cameron Archer 2 Premier League goals in 1,483 minutes on the pitch. points won when game changed by goal 0

Adam Armstrong 2 goals & 2 assists in 1,254 minutes points won when game changed by goal 2

Paul Onuachu 4 goals & 1 assist in 1,045 minutes Points won when game changed by goal 3

Not a great deal in it to be honest, poor records from the lot of them last season

I see Dom Ballard scored today to get off and running. Will be interesting to see how he gets on.

If the Turkish league is so bad, it makes you wonder why SR have a team in that league . They don’t seem to provide us with any talent

Yes the same way that Manchester City & Chelsea own clubs that are in inferior divisions across the globe than us, it enables us to loan players to them to give them experience , it enables us to sell players to them if they turn out not to be good enough.

It enables us to find out how they adapt to playing in division which is a step up to where they have played before, the Turkish League has about 4 good teams.

It means we don't find out we have bought a dud when he plays in our first team.

This is the modern world, football clubs have to diversify and evolve, our connections with Goztepe & Valenciennes have not affected the money that Sport Republic have put into Southampton FC and it could be said have benefitted us more than the other way around, Matsuki looks to have benefited from his spell with Goztepe & Sanda lookslike he could be a player after joining from Valenciennes.

Sport Republic have made mistakes no one can deny that, but we are moving forward, this is not 1997 when football clubs were just football clubs, we now have a good CEO in place who off the field is developing income from marketing sponsorship and other income streams that bring people into St Mary's throughout the week and not just matchdays and on the playing side we now have a good Director of football who has brought stability and clarity into the club.

When we had Jason Wilcox we moved forward, without him we went backwards, now we are moving forward again.

The issues we have had are nothing to do with Goztepe or Valenciennes they are all to do with not putting a Director of football in place for 9 months after Wilcox left in March 2024

You always say these flippant comments - SR have stabilised the club or we are now moving forward. Last summer you gushed about the players we signed who and in the main they were not good enough.
The truth is no one knows how the new players from abroad will settle in or we have moved forward. To me this summer looks like another scatter gun approach. We signed 12 players and didnt address the same old problems.

Yes, what we really needed to do this summer was strengthen the team in 3 key positions: goalkeeper, centre half and centre forward. Sport Republic bought Long, Quarshie and Downs. I suspect that none of them will be good enough to start against Pompey and that we'll be struggling to offload at least 2 of them next summer. That's how we roll. Also, the same as last summer, Sport Republic bought a bunch of midfielders. We'll probably be trying to get rid of some of them next summer too. There really has been very little evidence of successful team building under Sport Republic. It doesn't seem to be a priority for them.

They could have bought Viktor Johansson, Dael Fry, Isaac Price, Haji Wright and Ayoub El Kaabi for the same amount, and we'd have had a Championship winning team.

Why the downer on Quarshie?
He looks like work in progress to me,given the proper coaching and in time I think he would be ok.
Long was a strange one.
Downs,I'd like to know what they saw in him ?
Again I don't think we have seen the best of him yet.
Onuachu was a waste on our part, came in at a terrible time under poor managers.

The spine of the team is the heartbeat.

Goalkeeper
2 Centre Backs
2 Centre Midfielders
1 Centre Forward

The other 5 positions are ‘easier’ to fill.

Remember THAT team.
Forster
Alderweireld & Fonte
Wanyama & Schneiderlin
Pelle

That’s before Virgil van Strike appeared.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

I've been saying it on here for years. I first spotted how good he was when he played against our Under 21 team. We could have got him for a million or less. Even this summer we could have got him for less than we paid Middlesbrough for Finn Azaz. But, you're right, they don't need to sell him now they've got all that money from us.

The point is Sport Republic could have bought those players this summer.

You could probably pick half a dozen regular posters from here and they'd do a better job than Sport Republic's scouts appear to do. Just because people are in a job doesn't mean they should be in it.

I have to admit I do find it odd that often Saints seem to miss what we fans consider obvious candidates. is it that they are right and we are wrong? Is it that they don't want to come to saints maybe? Could be a number of reasons, but we never seem to be linked with any of the people fans mention.

Your comment about SR owning inferior clubs " it gives us the chance to offload players that are not good enough".
Why do we buy players that are not good enough, we've had far too many of them.

said it a million times on here, no spine, no chance

Also and I am no huge fan of Onuachu but what I do not understand is us offloading players of his ilk to only go and replace them with similar or even lesser players

You say:

".....our connections with Goztepe & Valenciennes have not affected the money that Sport Republic have put into Southampton FC...."

We are going to have to agree to disagree on this.

When Saints have given £5 million to Valenciennes for a young defender, who still seems to be nowhere near our first-team, I would suggest that the £5 million could have been used to bring in experienced players to improve the spine of the team, where we are still lacking (GK, CB, CF).

It's also management time / cost, which is being taken away from Southampton.

Man City and Chelsea are big enough institutions who can absorb the cost of having extra executives etc. to manage other clubs. We can't.

Has the signing of Joachim Kayi Sanda for an alleged 5 million euros (£4,3 million sterling) which probably is more like £2 million down plus add ons stopped us being the 2nd highest team in the Championship ? (3 million euros less than 1st place Ipswich and 18 million euros more than the 3rd place team Wrexham.)

When Lawrie Mcmenemy used to sign unknowns such as the likes of Mark Wright, everyone initially moaned, but were proved wrong.

Football clubs have to sign players of all status in the game, its not just about signing players like Finn Azaz for one of the top 10 biggest fees paid in the championship for a player, its all about signing players for the future .

You may feel that the goalkeeper & centre forward are not good enough, but that seems to be a different view point than the one held by Will Still.

I agree we lack a centre back, but we are overloaded there, we lack and experienced centre back and we dont even need to spend 5 million euros on that.

You are literally comparing apples and pears.

Lawrie was a manger and ran the club. He would go and watch potential signings and have the final say. Will Still is a coach and has players dumped on him. Back in Lawries day, he would sign 3 or 4 players a season. Quite often seasoned pro’s. Now days we sign 15 /20 players each season , made up mostly of ones for the future. So far under SR we have signed nearly 50 ones for the future.

With Will Still liking wingers and balls into the box, I am surprised we did not keep him. That said, as often us fans forget, it may have been more about the player wanting to leave as much as it was us wanting him to stay. he would have scored 12-15 this season i reckon.

I don’t blame him wanting to leave the way we played him.
What’s the point of having wingers and balls into the box if you don’t have anyone on the end of them?
